Gorbachev Visits Eureka College
WMBD/WYZZ - EUREKA -- ^ | Friday, Mar 27, 2009

President Ronald Reagan's Alma Mater hosts a world leader today.

Eureka College honors former Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev with an Honorary Doctorate. Accompanied by a small entourage, including his daughter, Gorbachev stepped foot on campus looking relaxed and right at home. It was the community that gathered in awe. “This is huge for Eureka College and Central Illinois," Reagan Museum Curator Brian Sajko said., The 78-year-old former Soviet leader came to Eureka to promote the College's new Ronald Reagan society. Gorbachev toured the Reagan Museum before spending a few moments reflecting in the Reagan Peace Garden that includes a five foot piece of the Berlin Wall. For the students, it was a real life lesson in history

“To have the connection made between the person who ended the cold war and the person who encouraged the end of the cold war is truly a great opportunity,” Student Body President Matthew Cahill said.

Gorbachev also attended a town hall meeting, where he received an honorary doctorate and answered a handful of questions, noting in one response, he now has a degree from the same school as his partner in peace. And it's a new badge of honor for this Small Central Illinois School.

“For a place like eureka that most people can't find on a map, to have Mikail Gorbachev, it gives us some legitimacy as an institution,” former student Darin Mahlke said.

Why do I get the feeling that Matt (and the rest of his generation) are unaware that the two are the same person. Gorbachev did not willing give up supreme power. His failure was thrust upon him. Yes, Reagan did not live to see the end of the Cold War, but he, Margret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II were the only three proactively responsible for the end of the cold war. It cracks me up that Gorbachev now tours the world as a half-assed hero/celebrity.

Reagan was still alive, and I am pretty sure he realized it happened.

Wasn’t peace loving Goprby the guy who warned the pope if he came to Eastern Europe he would end up carrying some lead in his body?

My bad. I guess its trure, you’re always right. Of course, ex-presidents don’t really go away or become irrelevant. Just ask Jimmy Carter.

Eureka is in beautiful Redwood country. But is a haven for hippie-type liberalism.

Why isn’t this piece of trash ex-dictator pushing daisies yet? Seems like he should be a hundred forty by now.
He is no friend of ours and would delight in our downfall to this day. I am sure obama and his minions give ol’ gorby the warm fuzzies.

If by "ended," you mean lost...

I remember that Gorbachev kissed Reagan’s casket at the funeral.
He seemed to respect and perhaps even like Reagan.

I guess that's true, but then he had to make a commercial for KFC (I think) in the mid 90's, because the Soviets didn't have a 401k plan, and we are all like "Hey, this Gorby guy's not so bad after all."

Reagan was, is and forever will be Gorby's only meal ticket. It pay to act like they were friends. Raisa and Nancy openly hated each other's guts.

Yes, I knew Nancy and Raisa did not get along at all.

But I thought it was a very nice and I think sincere gesture on Gorbachev part to kiss Reagan’s casket.

“I remember that Gorbachev kissed Reagan’s casket at the funeral. He seemed to respect and perhaps even like Reagan.”

Ronald Reagan was the grand master of strategic war. He won without firing a shot, and got his enemy to mourn his death. We sure could use him now.

So why is that former Nazi mass murderers are hunted down and communist mass murderers are given a free suite at the Presidio?
