Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Friday that Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. lied to Congress during his confirmation hearings by pretending to be open-minded about his judicial philosophy.
"We got into a little jam with Roberts. Roberts didn't tell us the truth. At least [Justice Samuel A.] Alito told us who he was," Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, said, comparing former President George W. Bush's two successful Supreme Court nominees.
"We're stuck with those two young men," Mr. Reid said, though he added that Democrats hope to try to balance out the judiciary overall by "having some moderates in the federal court system as time goes on."
The Senate's top Democrat also vowed never to use the so-called nuclear option to change the rules to prevent filibusters of judicial nominees. Republicans under then-Majority Leader Bill Frist, Tennessee Republican, were poised to employ the tactic in 2004 but were headed off by a bipartisan deal.
"The nuclear option is only one of the things the Republicans in power at that time did or tried to do to ruin our country," Mr. Reid said. "There is no way that I would be part of using the nuclear option. I want every Republican to hear that."
Mr. Reid joined fellow Democrats in voting to filibuster the nomination of Justice Alito, and on final passage voted against confirming Justice Alito and Chief Justice Roberts. The chief justice did not face a Democratic filibuster.
Former Sen. Fred Thompson, a Tennessee Republican who shepherded the chief justice's nomination through the Senate, said Mr. Reid's charge was off base.
"Senator Reid has compiled quite a catalog of mean and irrational statements about various people," Mr. Thompson said.

Did he accuse Roberts of perjury from the Senate floor or outside where there is no Congressional immunity?
So what if he did? Congress is populated with the largest pack of liars on the planet!
Reid is the worst living creature on earth.
Reid doesn’t hold a candle to Schumer or Frank(sorry,Fwank)for being a total scumbag-or Boxer/Deinstein either.He is however,a ceritifed POS.
I’m starting to think that, like Byrd, Reid ain’t playing with a full deck.
Every time that Senator from Nevada speaks - I feel like taking a Reid.....
But if he replaces Ginsburg and Stevens?
How much more liberal can you get?
And then I cheer up a little bit...
Whatever Roberts might have said cannot be nearly as much of a lie as when Reid swears to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.
I think Reid is drunk most of the time. Hopefully, Nevada will send him packing in 2010.
According to some, Roberts did twice deliver the Oath of Office of the Presidency to a man that was not constitutionally qualified to be president.
Cheer up! Chances are, whoever he picks, will be a closet tax cheat and would soon be exposed...
Or, considering how difficult it is for obama to fill his cabinet, he may not be able to appoint new justices... LOL
There are three tests that I’d like to require for political figures in DC.
First...a sanity and capable thinking test. You get ten questions...if you just five right...you pass. You get no outside help from your staff. Amongst the questions...explain the difference between the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Second....if you claim to be a lawyer...you get ten simple legal questions. If you get five right....you pass. Sadly...most of these lawyer-pretenders....insert various items into law each year....but then know nothing about law itself. Ask Chris Dodd about tax code which he inserts all the time.
Third and final....just a simple random drug test. Once a year. You fail...you get suspended from attending any function in DC for 60 days. The second time...you get kicked out entirely.
Based on what I’ve seen....at least three Senators are mentality unable to think and reason on their own. CNN and Fox don’t even bother messing with these guys because its just a joke. Even the state media for those three...won’t touch them because it would be very pitiful for a state resident to realize their guy just isn’t there.
"Unless we want to" he later added
Sure would love to see one of those Vegas call boys Reid employs just kick his ass.

There is no end to this "man's" arrogance and vile.
The man is just scum. Total scum.
This man has no shame.
Dot two: Dr. Orly Taitz hands off full dossier to Justice Roberts in public forum
Dot three: Serious review begins to take place
Dot four: Reid begins to discredit Chief Justice as having lied to congress.
And so the attack on the Supreme Court begins. Discredit the SCOTUS and anything or anyone can be tried by the mob in Congress. Add to that the web being abuzz about the possible 'bill of attainder" last week...
Consider the source. The vile hatefilled rant against Justice Thomas is simply Reid being Reid. This is simply more of the same.
A lying, dishonest poor excuse for a human being.
Why, Harry, he’s as open-minded as you are.
*Now, fight that, Harry.

Add to that Bawny Fwank’s allegation of homophobia against Scalia.
I have a number of Morman friends here in FL who know all about Reid. Except that they don’t call him “Harry,” they call him “Jack.”
No need to accept the word of a known liar like Reid at all.
Reid's setting us up for a liberal liar disguised as a "moderate", which is, of course, the same thing.
If Reid is “convinced” in his own convoluted mind that Roberts lied, then he will move to impeach him.
Only need 2/3’s (66) for a Senate removal. Now at 59. Add Franken Specter, Snowe, Collins, Lugar, Martinez, Murkowski, Bennett and he’s toast.
Discredit the SCOTUS, that is what is starting to happen. Ginsberg may be gone this year, but replacing her is a one for one affair.
Discredit the court and more “faith in the rule of law” falls from America. Congress or the 0bama Administration usurp more power.
I've long been very uncomfortable with the congressional kangaroo court on the Hill. Calling up oil execs./bankers/energy sector people to “testify.” Testify to what, on what grounds, under what Constitutional Power did or do they have to call for such things? If these people or businesses broke the law...file charges in the courts. Congress has been acting like head investigators, prosecutors, judge, and jury for several years now.
Great line by Thompson. It bears repeating over and over again. Feel free to insert the name of any current Dem leadership.
Worth using on a bumper sticker, too.
Big deal, Reid lied about being a Mormon. If he really followed the LDS Church, wouldn’t he be a Republican?
“We’re stuck with those two young men.”
And, we’re stuck with Mr. Reid.
Exactly. And that makes him a Jack Mormon. As well as a lying sack of horse shiite.
Communist totalitarianism did not die with the Soviet Union.
IMHO
I have noted that ever since Reid took Tom Daschle's place, he has promised (and delivered) all the obstructionism of Daschle, twice the hatred, and half the intelligence. For examples of name calling, he called President Bush a "loser," Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an "embarrassment," and said that UN Ambassador John Bolton is "abominable, mean, unreasonable and bizarre." My only surprise is that after all that, I expected him to call Chief Justice Roberts a "poo-poo head."
**** you harry... and your whore mother... you rat bastard!
LLS
Being majority leader in the Senate can he not be called out for making remarks against someone who holds a leadership position in another branch of government.
Surely there is some form of censure that it applicable or is this a case where freedom of speech means he can anything he likes about a fellow public servant.
The film “Casino”, based on the life, love, and leisure of Las Vegas casino executive and mob-connected sports handicapper Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, had Dick Smothers’ portray, the Senator, who was partly based on Nevada Senator Harry Reid, who was chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission. The scene in which the lead character is denied a license by the Nevada Gaming Commission is based on a December 1978 hearing when Harry Reid was the commission’s chairman; some of Reid’s statements are used in Smothers’ dialogue. Basically it showed the Senator lying his @ss off. (FR’s Cripplehawk, October 2008)
Too may commas and apostophes in my last - apologies to any repelled punctuation-purists.
JUST STFU REID. I SO DAMN SICK OF YOU.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep it up Mr. I am invincible Reid.
You do realize Roberts can REALLLYYYYYY bring this whole birth certificate thing that you are all cocky about to the forefront, right?
So, please continue Harry Reid.
1. Senator Reid, you need to quote the transcript of Roberts's confirmation hearings. What, exactly, are the lies you are talking about? I want citations, so I can check your assertion that Roberts was deceptive. Until I see the relevant quotes, my position is that you, Senator Reid, are the liar.
2. Apparently, the judges whose opinions track your political positions are, in your book, the "moderates." That is the lesson I think you are trying to teach people. It is a lesson that undermines the integrity of law. It goes right along with Barney Frank's recent, despicable assertion that Justice Scalia is a homophobe.
3. We're stuck with Harry Reid.
Amen, Bro, amen. You forgot Chris Dodd and The Swimmer. Reid is roughly even or slightly behind Turban Durbin.
The “nuclear option” is anything but. There was a time when filibustering was considered the “nuclear option.” More doublespeak from the Democrats.
They are not only demeaning the Supreme court but also the Constitution.
If you read any of the Founders writings describing what went on while they were drafting the Constitution I guess you can say they were Pretty conservative,so as Justice Roberts said that he was going to Interpret the Law as Written and that the Reasoning behind it is relevant ,I guess Mr Reid has a Problem with the Basic Foundation of the Country he Represents and Holds a Prominent possition of power in.
I suggest he might want to consider another line of work or to see a Therapist
Dr. Orly Taitz pulled a fast-one to get them to look at the concerns. She did something the libs didn't anticipate.
It is out there now, on recording, public.
Reid needs to discredit Roberts. Now, after how many years does Reid come forward with allegations that Roberts lied under oath? It is the fascist smear machine now starting to wage battle on the SCOTUS.
A partisan hack slanders an honorable man, and none of his fellows in the Democratic Party (or the Republican Party either it seems) calls him on it.
Dot Five: Nothing happens.
F—k you Hairy A. Reid.
Harry Reid is a National Disgrace....Thanks Nevada!
