The Departure: A Conservative Exodus to Costa Rica?
Pajamas Media ^ | March 28 | Adam Graham

Posted on 03/28/2009 7:49:31 AM PDT by AJKauf

Dallas Morning News columnist Rod Dreher may have to fly to Costa Rica if he wants to see some of his friends.

In one of his recent blogs, Dreher told of multiple people discussing potential moves to Costa Rica if things go downhill. These aren’t people who are eager to join Paulville. Rather, these are normal, middle-class conservatives who are considering moving to Costa Rica if the country goes downhill under President Obama.

One of the commenters on Dreher’s blog asked if this was not unlike liberals throwing a fit in 2004 and threatening to leave if Bush won. Not exactly. The left’s threat was always more of a threat to hold its breath if it didn’t get its way. The concerns of Dreher’s friends seem to have little to do with the election and far more to do with the results of Obama’s policies. So all this talk of leaving doesn’t remind me of Alec Baldwin’s threat to deprive our nation of his presence. Instead, it reminds me of a white Zimbabwean I recently met at a writer’s conference. She spoke with a longing for home, a love of a place thousands of miles away that she could only picture in her memories. Zimbabwe is not a place where one is able to prosper and thrive. At this time, many people wonder if the same thing could happen in America.

How legitimate is the concern? ...

This doesn’t surprise me as I know quite a few folks heading to Costa and Panama and other points south.

These aren’t weirdos either, these are engineers and IT folks - can you say brain drain?

I agree. However, if the Founding Fathers could see what happened, they most likely wouldn’t have gone through the effort...let England prop up the corpse.

Those with families probably should leave. Single conservatives should stay and be martyred.

I’ve already seen too many enslaved children in South East Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. No more!

If American freedom ceases, all freedom ceases. Cost Rica exists because the USA exists. France and Sweden can act like France and Sweden because the USA exists.

If we fail here, all freedom fails, sooner or later.

“What if the Founding Fathers had left because things were getting bad?”

With all due respect, the people who came to the new world were mostly running away from the old one for religious freedom or economic opportunity.

I’d not like to leave America either, but I’m not thrilled about my kids being born into slavery to repay national debt to China and Japan.

A big difference is that if ODumbo is successful in implementing his disastrous policies, it won't be just conservatives who will be fleeing from the chaos. Whereas when the Alec Baldwins of the world were squealing about Bush shredding the constitution, they were largely just bloviating (they're still here, after all).

To a lesser extent, a similar situation exists in New England, where a lot of (too many) liberal Massholes have fled from the glorious People's Republic that they had once supported so entuhsiastically, now that their idiotic policies have had their inevitable outcome, and they have taken up residence in the once-free-but-now-occupied-territory of New Hampshire, where they are again soiling the nest...

Right and when we reclaim the Nation those cowards that fled remain where they landed. Anybody that cowers and runs isn’t worthy of the “Conservative” title much less participation in that which we fought for.

Who can trust a coward? Look at the misAdministration we have today. Nothing but cowards.

To abandon ship is tempting though. Fighting ignorance is all but impossible. Second, staying imposes a responsibility, leaving imples acceptance of the situation where one goes. Being more-or-less stateless means one just exists with the hand one is dealt.

Fighting the tide of negative demographics requires a tactic other than talk and logic doesn’t it?

When they were young, and !IRRESPONSIBLE! it was tough to get them to do anything. Now they pick up a broom without asking and start right in.

I guess we’ll stay.

Will they? Who will they fight? How? Words are cheap. Would they be some sort of “bloodless coup”? How would it be organized? Another civil war? I don’t see that happening. Many Americans will just throw up their hands and go along with this New World Order, but the smart ones will be making alternate plans.

That is thing, the only true place that is free is Heaven. We need to pray for Christ to return so Christians can go there and get away from evil. However while we are still on earth we need to pray for God to bless us here and help us have freedom here till he comes back.

Costa Rica is cleaner, safer and less class conscious than Mexico. You can still rent a car there and drive around the country - just stay out of Limon. The country is generally richer and more free than most other Latin American countries.

Ticas - Costa Ricans are fun people to hang out with but not the most productive folks in the hemisphere - I wouldn’t hire a building contractor there.

The problem is Ticas are WAY left of center politically.

Costa Rica’s two leading political parties are the PLN (Partido de Liberatcion Nacional) who are European stype social democrats and the PAC (Partido Accion Ciudadana) who are urban leftists of the ACORN type.

Why would conservatives want to live under such a government?

"What if the Founding Fathers had left because things were getting bad?"

What do you mean????

If the Pilgrims had never left England, there never would have been an America for the Founding Fathers to turn into the U.S.A. Sometimes leaving is the best thing.

Just imagine a Costa Rica filled w/ conservatives. Sovereign, wealthy, free and warm. Ahhhh, it's sounding better all the time.

Well, not quite disgusting, actually. Not when you consider that our esteemed Founding Fathers "ran away" to a new land and founded this country. Not when you consider that so much of this country's greatness was built by people who "ran away" (emigrated) from oppressive societies and governments to start a new life here.

To stay and fight, one must believe that the fight is winnable. Can our side reverse the forces of socialism - as opposed to simply nibbling around the edges whenever we are elected to office? What evidence is there to support this notion?

Socialism has overtaken and corrupted many once capitalistic Western societies. It has met scant resistance elsewhere and is at last overtaking this one. It controls nearly every one of our institutions today, save a small part of the church. Education, Wall Street, the news media, the law - even the corrupt Republican party caves to its demands (the last eight years of GWB should be all the evidence one needs).

If someone has a plan to reverse the slide toward socialism in this country and to wrest control back of its institutions, sign me up for the Revolution. Till then, all options, including a move to CR is on the table.

Running away helped the Jews who fled Nazi Germany. It helped my ancestors who fled Europe. There comes a time when the handwriting is on the wall. I don't know if it is there yet, but it may soon be.

By the way, our Founding Fathers never faced the problems of a Multicultural Marxist Amerika. If it gets to that point, count me in on leaving oppression for freedom.

Are you really prepared to see your property confiscated, your wife and daughters raped, and your sons sodomized? That is a likely result in a Multicultural Marxist America.

In any event, after you and your family have been sent to the reeducation camps, all of you will learn to “love Big Brother.”

Could going there have something to do with the lack of Property taxes and ability to live and have servants on a very low number of Dollars?

Living in an English only, “American Compound” for safety and not to benefit Costa Rica was how it was explained to me. Here we criticize immigrants who do not try to “blend in”.

“Why would conservatives want to live under such a government?”

Why indeed! I’ve been around and seen what the world has to offer. Costa Rica would be ok, if you wanted to spend your days in some sort of walled retirement home, but would you call that living? I wouldn’t. Still, there are plenty of folks that would be quite happy to live out their remaining years as in some sort of expatriate geezer status. Not for me, or my children, thank you very much.

There are still plenty of places in the US (outside the urban areas) where a conscientious parent can raise the next generation of patriots, and have plenty of good company while they’re doing it. Most Libs have trouble existing outside of these urban areas, as there’s little philosophical support for them. A giant inverted bowl of blue sky is foreign territory for their likes. Makes ‘em nervous, as well it should.

Yeah, there’s still plenty of acceptable places in US to live. It’s a no-brainer as to how to get there.

Just go.

“Brain drain”-—so true. The emigration of talent and capital is empirically proven in every socialist regime. Many in times past came here. Like capital, talent and brains know no borders so the likelihood of this demographic event is very high and may be starting.

Conservative flight is one of the reasons that California is going downhill with a bullet. About 1,000 a day throw in the towel there. Soon enough, there won't be anyone left in the state but liberals, leftists, and the gimme class. It'll fall of its own weight. Once that occurs, their solution will be even more socialism.

I'm one of those Cali conservatives who fled. I stood and fought for as long as I could, but a year into Arnold's term I could see that the good guys were hopelessly outnumbered. When the horde moves into your once-safe neighborhood, and for sale signs sprout like mushrooms all over your town, it's pretty much over.

I've been watching the quiet exodus of conservatives out of liberal areas for a couple of years now. We seem to be organically re-grouping into redder states and areas of the country. When that final call to arms comes, it's likely that entire sections of the country will be in solidarity.
