President Obama and the Democrats should wave the white flag in their strawman war on Rush Limbaugh. The Media Research Center delivered the grim casualty figures for the Democrats. Since January, the top talk show gabber's ratings have soared off the charts. Radio affiliates that carry Limbaugh's syndicated show call the ratings boost he's gotten from the Democrat's orchestrated attack on him a "dramatic surge." This writer predicted as much when President Obama cracked to Congressional Republicans in late January that they should knock off listening to Limbaugh if they expected to get anything done in Congress and with his administration.
The gabber instantly snatched at the quip and turned it into a multi show bonanza. No matter what topic Limbaugh gassed on, he managed to slide in a reference to Obama's prop up of him as the Democrat's prize punching bag. This did three things. It gave him an even bigger pile of fodder to puff himself up as the emperor of talk radio, claim to be the real kingmaker in the GOP, and in a perverse way paint himself as a credible and thoughtful political critic. It snapped many shell shocked Congressional Republicans out of their post election funk. Now suddenly feisty and combative, they draw a deep line in the sand against any and everything that Obama proposed. And it stiffened the spines of many timid Republicans and made them determined not to be bullied, or at least appear not to be bullied, by a mere talk show host into standing up to Obama.

It’s too late for that. Obama egged this situation on and on, wouldn’t let it go. He can’t back down now, it will look weak and defeating to the Oba-cult.
These hacks are so sensitive and gutless in the face of criticism, it’s little wonder Rush has soared in numbers. Now that neutrals are paying attention, I think any chance to silence talk radio will be met with accusations of silencing the opposition, not the lie that it’s “equal time” on the radio.
I sell a product that has grown 10 times more from negative press then all the ad dollars I’ve pissed away. Go Limbaugh!

I have a theory. Unlike any other conservative Rush isn't beholden to the MSM for the ability to reply. I suspect the people doing it are so used to the MSM covering for them that they forgot the one very rare case when they can't. Had they chosen any other victim - Sarah Palin, for example - that individual would have been screened out by the usual sneering jackals, and in fact that's what the latter did try with Rush. But that filter doesn't work when the victim owns his own microphone. If they're smart they won't ever try it again. They're really not that smart.

Most of Rush’s ratings boost is from first-time listeners. He is drawing a lot of centrist-dems who are tuning in and are liking what they hear. Keep hammerin’ the message Rush! I will add to it: they thought that even Rush responding to the charge would be like a man alone, talking to a wall. They underestimated the power of both his regular listeners and all the new ones they’d help him get.
You see, these people don’t listen to Rush. They actually think he is some kind of screaming shock jock. That’s what I thought when I heard descriptions of him like Hutchinson’s in the American press when I was in Europe and he first came on the national scene.
I had been here on vacation once and turned on this shock jock everyone thought was So Funny, Howard Stern. Within two minutes, he was screaming at the mike, hoping that some other talk jock who had just suffered a heart attack would please DIE!!! It was really very cold and mean. (Now I know that he was talking about Don Imus, whom I’d never heard of then.)
So I expected Limbaugh to be more of the same, and I think that is all these libs think he is. But when new people tune in to hear the horror or the bleating train wreck, and find that Rush is a normal guy with a gift for explaining the truth about things, and a wicked yet charming sense of humor, they stick around.
