WILLIE BROWN: Assault weapons have no place on streets
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/29/9 | Willie Brown

Posted on 03/29/2009 9:21:14 AM PDT by SmithL

If there's one lesson to be learned from the tragedy in Oakland, it's that there should be no debate about taking assault weapons off the streets.

There is no civil liberties issue here. There is no justification for an AK-47 in private hands. Period.

There used to be a nationwide ban on assault rifles, until it expired in 2004. We should bring it back.

As for what to do in high-crime neighborhoods, I've been there, and the only answer is to be tough.

Public safety cannot be subjected to popularity. You've got to execute on the basis of what you believe will make it safe, and you've got to be prepared to take the heat.

Police departments are paramilitary organizations. They can't be made up of social workers. Officers risk their lives every day, and you've got to back them.

If there's an incident like the BART police shooting of Oscar Grant, you have to be decisive as well. Investigations have to be quick and they have to be thorough.

But regardless of the rhetoric you hear in some street protests, this is not the '60s.

In the '60s, African Americans didn't have all the protections we have now.

We didn't have power in the cities, with people like Elihu Harris or myself as mayors. We didn't have Eric Holder as attorney general. We didn't have Barack Obama as president.

We're past the time when people weren't being served at lunch counters because they were black.

It's a new day and we should be living in it, not always looking back.

I won’t put an assault weapon on the street as somebody might run over it!

This man is ignorant on so many dimensions, it's literally scary! He, and his ilk, are far more dangerous then all the AK47s in Afghanistan.

1) As it has been pointed out, this criminal was not in legal possession. 2) The officers were shot in the head. I've seen beef steer drop dead instantly from a .22 Long Rifle between the eyes. 3) Any long gun can be used as an "assault rifle" in the hands of a skilled user. A .22 mag using hollow points can disintegrate a melon the size of a person's head. 5 rounds could equal 5 kills.

The AK 47 used in the 3rd and 4th Murders by the long time Paroled Criminal, Rapist of the 12 year old girl was already banned in California a long time ago. Its possession is strictly regulated by the Federal Government. (First two officers were Murdered by this Criminal with a handgun)

Yet the Paroled Rapist turned Murderer, who is not even legally allowed to possess ANY gun still had that banned gun!

(liberal logic)....
Let's join together to ban them AK-47’s again!!!!!!, Yes a second ban will do the trick that will stop this type of crime. That will teach them, a second ban would have made him turn that gun in.

So lets hold hands and push for more laws banning the guns that are banned, because the ban ain't working, thus we need to ban them again. .....(liberal logic)

(Real Logic)...
Fire those that Paroled this Murderer, stop parole for repeat criminals, open up room in the jails by releasing the Oakland Rev. Hoye who is jailed for pro-life messages!
Also understand that these “assault weapon” gun control laws are a failure, they do not stop this type of crime. ...(Real Logic)

Hmmmm.

So a traditional 30.06 M1 Garand, or 30 caliber M1 Carbine, are ok, but a semi auto CAR15 with the far smaller .223 caliber is not.

Nothing like a reasoned approach to the CRIMINAL misuse of weapons. (sarcasm)

"So a traditional 30.06 M1 Garand, or 30 caliber M1 Carbine, are ok"

BZZZZZZT. Not according to these guys they're not. It has nothing to do with a correct definition of an "assault weapon". If you look closely at their list, you'll see a clause for "anything procured for military use".

Your great-grandfather's trapdoor Springfield is an assault weapon to hear these guys tell it.

The murderer seems to agree. He did not use an AK47. How many AK47s are manufactured in the US per year Willie?

Willie my dear, you know nuttin. What have you, Willie, ever done to rid the community of gangs and their racist violence? Same answer, nuttin.

To restate the obvious ad nauseum: the problem ain't guns, it is the miscreants and felons (as once shown as an example in this case) who are allowed on the streets and use them. This guy should have been shackled and behind four foot walls with razor wire perimeter and not on the street with so much as a paper clip.

Instead the liberal judges and electeds in California (including and especially Jerry "the joke Jesuit" Brown, now AG), have appeased and tolerated gangs and their ilk and now we have cops murdered because of your policies. Get out!

Bull$hit! There's a perfectly good reason for law abiding citizens to have AK's and it has nothing to do with hunting, sport or even personal protection. It is to guard against a tyranical gov't and it's spelled out in the constitution, the federalist papers and many other docs of yesteryear.

There are already laws on the books against fully
automatic weapons: enforce them!

Yes it was an SKS. Gun grabbers don’t know, and don’t care about the difference.

The definition of an assault rifle is a compact selective fire rifle of intermediate power.

“Assault weapon” is a political term for a semi automatic firearm with a detachable magazine that has two or more of the following military style features: pistol grip, flash surpressor, folding stock, bayonet mount, barrel shroud, or grenade launcher.

So the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 didn’t even pertain to the AK-47, unless it was just a semi auto version of it. Nor would it pertain to the SKS used in the shootings if hadn’t been a version designed to take a detachable magazine.

He’s right. They don’t belong on the streets.

They belong in law abiding citizen’s hands, safes, and gun racks, on tables when you clean them, on your shoulders when being carried or in people’s arms, etc.

On the street? Not good for the weapon.

All that you say it true.

I can't cite it for you, but if you look at the -1bama / Holder gun ban list, there's a clause that includes, to paraphrase, anything that's ever been procured for military use.

Thus, the M1 carbine, M1 rifle, Colt 1911, Smith model 1917, 1903, etc, etc, are all at the discretion of the AG.

As much as I've criticized the NRA, and rightfully so at times, NOW IS THE TIME to encourage your gun-owning friends to step up and take them up on the free membership offering. If we lose now, we lose everything.

There's nothing outstanding about a gun-grabber.
Maybe he'll catch a bullet.
