New Mormon anti-freeper site and campaign to bankrupt FR
rumor mill | March 29, 2009 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 03/29/2009 2:35:03 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

I understand there is a new anti-freeper site started by disgruntled former and present Mormon FReepers and it is their intention of bankrupting FR during the coming Freepathon by withholding their donations and disrupting our activities. Well, all I can say is, if they feel that badly against FR, by all means they should withhold their donations and drop out of FR. But it they attempt to disrupt our operations I will guarantee they will no longer be members of FR. If that is their wish, so be it.

I'm not going to try to defend FR from their claims of religious persecution, but I will say that Mormons have and always have had free reign to post their threads on FR just as all other religious groups have enjoyed. Free Republic defends the right to freedom of religion and has always welcomed religious discussion and always will. And Mormons have always been welcome here. I have absolutely nothing against Mormons.

If you are one who has left or is leaving, I wish you well, but disruption of FR is not welcome and will not be tolerated.

And this is not the first time such activity has been attempted by groups of disgruntled former FReepers. Good luck with that. There is always some group that feels FR should be bent to their way of thinking and end up saying my way or the highway. Well, I don't know about you, but I'm not changing so I guess it's the highway. Is it Feb 8 yet?

God bless.

I always felt Mormons took a lot of heat here, BUT they got a fair, honest and OPEN forum to state their views and beliefs.

In fact it was more than OPEN. Mormons, among other groups like Catholics, can and did post in protected forums (devotional/caucus)where their theology could go unchallenged and unrebutted. That IMHO is bending over backwards and a credit to FR.

This is astonishing stuff.

I have been reading this post for a few minutes now and frankly, I am very surprised to learn of this.

I certainly do not see eye to eye with LDS, but on political issues I have long thought that most have their heads screwed on right.

Crazy Jim...just crazy.

Those that feel that way should go take their frustrations out over at the DailyKOS.

How does hurting this excellent grassroots platform help in their cause? You are only enabling and empowering the very groups that despise you - the Mormon.

Maybe before you cast your stones at an American Patriot - Jim Robinson, you should spend time reflecting on what it really means to be a Mormon. Apostle Paul had something to say about this:

“Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.”

We need to stand together at this time where our very existence in under the largest assault in history of our country.

We need to focus solely on the core principles that will keep us together instead of focusing on particulars that would otherwise drive us apart.

Do not underestimate our enemy. Remember the person that was least likely to ever be elected President of our great Republic has been put in office.

We need to set aside our differences and focus on preserving our Constitution and Republic through the tenacity FREEPER’s have.

Let’s focus our energies on turning our country around and ending the era of Political Correctness once and for all.

At this time in history we all need to rise above the fray and make that continued commitment to see this through.

Without grassroots efforts like Free Republic we don’t stand a chance!

I have family members who are Mormons and I haven’t seen anything on FR to offend the Mormon faith. If I’ve missed it I would like for someone to e-mail the links to me where it took place.

I can vouch for that, Jim.

The only remark I ever had pulled on Free Republic was a retort I gave to the late, unlamented (by me, anyway) Illbay that was apparently reported by him as "anti-Mormon."

“I always felt Mormons took a lot of heat here, BUT they got a fair, honest and OPEN forum to state their views and beliefs.”

Not so. Or more so, depending on outlook.
Check out how many threads are posted using the magic words “devotional”
or “caucus”.. that means no conflicting opinion will be allowed.
Comments are deleted. It’s a kind of bizarre cowardice and usage
of rules to gain a bully pulpit. No other group does this
to such an extent.

That’s really not the answer.

Indeed, it’s the inverse of the answer. Freedom of speech is just that — freedom, for pro- and con- mormons.

It is pathetic that a group of mormons want to quiet critics of their church when they have equal ability to provide their side of the story at the same location.

And silencign critics by such dishonest means is very telling of what kind of people they are. Not a pretty picture for their religion.

First, for the record, I waved goodbye to organized religion a while ago.

I have read through the Mormon devotionals quite a few times and frankly, as an ex-Christian, I saw much that could be filed under “holier than thou”.

I think all religious posts should be disallowed, or given defined sections of FR within which to post away from the main public traffic.

It will always end badly. If not just because someone is going to feel slighted, ignored, abused, etc.

“Holier than thou” is a built-in factor in all religion. It’s like putting Betta fish together. Eventually, it will go sour.

Mormons have been hit a lot by people here who say they are not what they say they are, and denigrate their religions and customs. FR is a part of my life but if they were ripping Judaism as much here as they did Mormonism, I’d not feel comfortable here either. Freedom of religion. But freedom to comment on it too. Within the framework of us all being on the same team.

With that said, it is atrocious for these people to attempt to hurt FR, even if they felt put upon here.

What I try to do is to counteract IN WORDS when I see people verging on the offensive. Fellow FReepers, I suggest you do the same, even if it’s not YOUR affiliation that’s being insulted. Just step in and ask if they’d want their beliefs/race attacked in this way.

For example, I see on some of the mocking Obama threads some racist jokes. I am personally offended by them. There is a googolplex of humor opportunities in the Obama presidency that don’t involve traditional racist cracks. Of course one can and should mock political correctness and hypocrisy about race (see Rush Limbaugh and Magic Negro)! But leave out the crude 1940s style racial references, please. What a horrible thing for black conservatives to see; don’t they get enough racism from liberals??

It thinks it is superior becauseit stopped believing in God.

Proudly proclaims itself as a former christian like it’s a badge of honor.

And wants religious talk banned.

How disgusting.

Jim, they can try as they will. It is stupid. Why make it a Mormon versus FR thing? This isn’t a religious site though we talk about religious issues occasionally usually in defense of religion from Democrats/Liberals and the ACLU. I personally don’t think highly of the book of Mormon, I believe it to be fiction made up by a conman, but this does not mean that I think badly of Mormons, people believe all kinds of things I do not believe in. They are not in a special place where that is concerned because much of modern conventional wisdom is nothing more than an intricately crafted mythology spread through the ever shrinking pulpits of CNN, MSNBC, CBS, and ABC.

It is where they share a common ground in opposition to liberalism and the desire to defend our country, our constitution, and the American way of life that I find allegiance with them. Many of us could not support their fetish for Mitt Romney and some I know took that personally. But it wasn’t personal I don’t vote for people simply because they have chiseled good looks or because they wear Jesus on their sleeves. Romney had the weakest record in support of conservatism of any of the candidates in the race except maybe Rudy Guiliani and at least Guiliani ran as the fiscal conservative social liberal he is. The proof is not in what a politician says but what they do.

That said I do not have to agree with them on their religious peculiarities or in their religious bias towards electing one of their own no more than I have to agree with someone’s sexual peculiarities. I have been a big supporter of the Mormon Church and their efforts on Prop 8 and other issues as have many here on FR have been. We share much common ground but if they are going to insist on calling any religious criticism bigotry then they are no better than the sexual activists and radical Muslims they decry and we are better off without them if they feel that way.

FR will continue to be the center of the conservative online world because you Jim allow a forum that is unlike any other but sadly what so many seek is a comfortable echo room where they are never challenged. I for one do not seek the conservative version of the liberal establishment. We are conservative because we value what makes America strong and that is the freedom to disagree and argue our ideals in an open forum.

I may have taken FR for granted in the past but you can count on my financial support from now on.
