I would vote for him over them every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Yeah, but your votes are still discounted since Acorn got the entire Dallas Cowboys to vote three times each in like 7 different states.

1. To start with :

Newt Gingrich: A Single Nuke Could Destroy America

2. “ONE” nuke will destroy a small area,,,

3. 100 + A-Bombs were tested at the Yucca Flats/etc.

Point : 1 weapon will not kill 80,000,000 gun owners,,,

We “ARE” America!!!...;0)

Newt’s reference to a single high altitude detonated nuke has to refer to its EMP effect.

Shutting down all our computer based infrastructure systems and degrading our society back to the Nineteenth Century is the intent. For Pakistan and Iran, this is too easy.

Since today’s Muslims live in the Seventh Century as it is.

EMP is real, folks.

If Newt can't make his blitherings consistent with reality, is it too much to ask that he at least make them internally consistent with themselves?

Indeed. We've fired dozens if not hundreds of nukes of every size from popgun to the granddaddy Hydrogen variety. Why haven't we disappeared into the mists of time with those? Oh, because they didn't hit population?

IMHO, we could lose any single major population center and survive fine, including my home here in Miami, FL. Except for the cold implacable rage that would spring from such an incident and result in a thermonuclear response never before seen in history, I think the country would soldier on. Well, I should temper my opinion on the national response as to who occupies the White House and Congress.

“The electromagnetic pulse was first observed during high-altitude nuclear weapon detonations.

Electromagnetic weapons are still mostly classified and research surrounding them is highly secret. Military speculators and experts generally think that E-bombs use explosively pumped flux compression generator technology as their power source, though a relatively small (10 kt) nuclear bomb, exploded between 30 and 300 miles in the atmosphere could send out enough power to damage electronics from coast to coast in the US. The US Army Corps of Engineers issued a publicly available pamphlet in the late 1990s that discusses in detail how to harden a facility against “HEMP” - high frequency electromagnetic pulse. It describes how water pipes, antennas, electrical lines, and windows allow EMP to enter a building.”

I never liked him, and don’t know if i trust him, but to be perfectly honest, over the past 8 years, i have come to respect his opinion has one of the few rational conservatives around that tends to have a compelling and convincing argument on most issues. maybe its because he is out of office now and his opinions don’t sound as partisan or legislatively partisan. I don’t know if this makes sense or not, but...its how i feel. When he comes on the radio, i always listen to him because you always get pure red meat. With that said, i would never vote him for president because he doesn’t have the general presidential package.

Newt did fall for the global warming propaganda. I turned away at that point. He harmed himself, but I think that is all. No politician, or person, is perfect.

Newt lead Republicans to control of the House of Representatives, when it seemed like Republicans were an eternal minority, and could never gain control. He cut the growth of federal spending that gave us the surplus that Democrats claim as Clinton’s accomplishment.

This article is just another case where Newt is challenging liberal policies. He is articulate, aggressive, and generally right. We are very fortunate to have him on our side, and we should be on his side whenever he is right.

We can’t afford petty vendettas against Republicans. That is part of the reason we lost the House, Senate, and Presidency. Yes, we can insist that Republicans be conservative. But I don’t see that Newt is off-base on this article. Can you?

When I heard him concede the global warming premise by suggesting that the private sector could better deal with the problem than the government, I wrote him off. F5*& him. Politician. We need to get completely rid of professional politicians.

I had been under the impression that a rather small nuke could EMP about a third of the US, but would need to be detonated near the atmosphere. The worry was a rouge missile from a shrimp boat or something, detonating above Earth near the atmosphere. The way it was described to me, no vehicle with an electronic ignition system would work after such an attack. I have no idea if this is scientifically accurate.

Not all were subterranean explosions. If you’ll recall there were many during the 50’s that involved troops in the open and phony towns pasted together to measure the effects of over pressure and to create the effective downwind drift templates they taught me when I attended the US Army School of Nuclear, Biological & Chemical warfare back in the 1980s.

“We can’t afford petty vendettas against Republicans. That is part of the reason we lost the House, Senate, and Presidency.”

No, you’re 100% wrong.

We lost because we abandoned principles. A politician like Newt would sell out on any principle, if it would advance his personal agenda.

With Obama’s grab for power and the resulting fascist structure of our government, people like Newt, whether they’re running for office or advocating policy, would only add to the problem.

In 2012 we’re going to need a president who would be willing to diminish federal control—to break the chains Obama has placed on the private sector. People like Newt, driven by personal ambition, would not let go of that power.

I am confident Palin would be willing to forego personal power in order to reestablish liberty. There must be others out there like her.

Some electronic ignitions can be disabled by just the right pulse, and yes, a fairly low-yield nuke can cause significant EMP pulses.

There are a number of ifs and conditions. The nuke must have the right characteristics, so you’d need lots of expertise in getting the thing right, or a lot of luck. Placement is critical, you’d need the correct altitude, so you’d need to be very confident of your yield and temperature and burn rate beforehand. To get it right would mean plenty of experience burning pits, to know your process gets the right device.

Not getting it right would still give you an EMP pulse, but maybe not as damaging as you want.

And the retaliatory strike would be severe, the military stuff to do that is hardened against EMP just for that reason.

The ignition issue is complex in that the type of ignition and local shielding would need to be known. I don’t know that the military bothers to harden their vehicles (I do EMP hardening analyses, but for bigger structures and vessels) but that will be a clue as to the size of the threat and what to do about it.

Part of warfare is convincing your opponent that your weaponry is superior and that there is no way your enemy can defend against it. Nuclear winter, everyone dies from fallout, no point in shelters, and “EMP will zap everything” are examples (not that there is not some truth to elements of this).

In VN, there were people who planted doctored ammo, designed to blow up. This was coupled with news stories about poorly constructed AKs, bad steel being the given cause. So when you heard of someone’s rifle blowing up and hurting people, those news stories would come to mind. And there are constant stories about how our equipment does not work, cannot work, will be ineffective, and so forth.

It’s easier for the Russians to convince us that a missile shield in Europe won’t work than it is to design a counter for one, and the same is true for a “small country” with one rocket and one (maybe) nuke- if they can get us to surrender before they launch, they’ve saved a few billion in development cost.

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a byproduct of detonating [bomb above the Earth’s atmosphere. When a nuclear weapon is detonated in space, the gamma rays emitted trigger a massive electrical disturbance in the upper atmosphere. Moving at the speed of light, this overload will short out all electrical equipment, power grids and delicate electronics on the Earth’s surface. In fact, it would take only one to three weapons exploding above the continental United States to wipe out our entire grid and transportation network. It might take years to recover from, if ever.]

The fool politicians and democrats and rinos do not care at all. They just continue to destroy all America by their stupidity and fool Americans support the idiots in government.
What can be said?
The fools who voted and support the democrats and rinos continue to sow the wind and will reap the whirlwind of God’s anger in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The wrath of the Lamb is coming and who shall be able to stand.
Bury your dead.

That’s a valid point - but it’s undermined by the fact that, in order for M.A.D. to be an effective deterrent, both sides have to be reasonably sane.

Korea’s leadership, Sane?

Newt’s point seems to be that the USA has a valid need to implement and maintain a functional defense against missile attack; and I agree.

You know what's ironic? I'll bet that if we could look back on the records of all these holier-than-thou FReepers who want to decapitate every GOP politician who's ever done one thing wrong, we'd find that every last one of these FReepers had something we could accuse them of being a RINO about. “Probably 50% of the critics on FR now are leftist trolls. The below article link from Andrew Breitbart exposes what is going on with the left and their infiltration of Right Wing sites...”

This is interesting; I wouldn’t think it would be nearly as high as 50%, but then again, I could be a left-wing troll, trying to deceive by my non-chalant lack of alarm toward the possibility of other left-wing trolls. Seriously, I don’t doubt that there is some of this going on, and I find it annoying, because at FR, I think open left-wing dissent is tolerated. So if you’re a liberal and don’t agree with something here, just come out and say it straight up, I’ll respect your opinion much more that way. You're a little late, Newt.

That "nuke" already struck America on Novermber 4th, 2008. That "nuke" will be far more destructive to the U.S. than the 9/11 attacks though with far less bodies.

Newt ( and some others ) might claim that was the main force behind the Republican takeover, but even the RATS now admit it was the AWB!

And THAT is the reason we can't ever nominate anti-gun RINO’s like Mutt Romney, Rooty Ghouliani, etc!

Our candidates don't have to be perfect but some issues are deal breakers.

BTW...I agree on Newt.

Obama doesn’t want Black Americans to die, or his rich democrat friends or the Liberals. He doesn’t want to rule a nation of rubble. I believe he just doesn’t get it. We Americans have become fat and lazy. We have to realize that we can LOSE a war and along with it all we have. The wars of the future will be fought in cyberspace, outer space, at sea, air and land. It will be a war of both terrorism, high tech and good old style movements of armies and navies. When America faces this sort of enemy what will liberals do? Run to Sweden? (some will) or stand up and fight. Most will take up arms, I believe. When push comes to shove—Liberals are Americans first in their hearts.

That is your opinion only. He worked against large government while Speaker of the House and would do so as President.

You wrote:

I don’t disagree. However I’ve seen Newt handle interviewers (many hostile, a few friendly) and he does so exceptionally well. He can handle Katie Courac and anyone else. Newt also comes to any forum well prepared with arguments and facts. That is important when you are dealing with people on the fence. It is also a way to respond to the inevitable Democratic party attempts to defame the Republican nominee. He is smart and prepared and everyone can see it. He also has good a background in history, which keeps him grounded and secure in his conservatism. (I’ll forgive him for saying he admires Teddy Roosevelt).

I watched some of his television show that the Democrats attacked as partisan. It was not partisan. For every time that he mentioned Lincoln positively, he mentioned FDR positively. That might not be my personal preference, but if that is the kind of diplomacy/tact/politicking that is needed to win the White House, it’s O.K. with me.

From my research the most likely delivery system would be from a freighter...say an Iranian freighter disguised as an African one. They would launch from the Gulf..perhaps near Florida. Then scuttle the ship...so no evidence where it came from. How would giggles respond to that? Do nothing I’m sure. Declare martial law and take our guns “for our safety”.

Just picture it..no power..no refrigeration..no running vehicles..food runs out..no cell phones..no net...no myspace!! The horror! People would turn crazy..a real mad max situation.

Newt is the worst possible spokesman for conservatism. His past political career cannot negate what he does now, like his silly little global warming speeches or his criticism of Rush as he sucks up to whoever.

I know he has a brain, but it’s his heart I’m concerned about. Newt has been infected with the Washington DC virus. It infiltrates the central nervous system and induces its victims to put self interest before everything else—that makes it fatal to conservative principles.

Newt thinks we have to “do something” about man-made global warming—his position marks either a significant drop in his IQ or an unprincipled embrace of political correctness.

Remember—the potential damage to our nation and to our economy is huge when people like Newt, who are perceived to be “far right,” make comments in favor of global warming.

A few weeks ago Newt made some kind of Michael Steele like comment about Rush, and Rush’s response was “Frankly, I’m tired of discussing Newt.”

And finally, the most telling thing about Newt is his repeating over and over that he wants to have a “national debate” about this or that. It shows he thinks talking is the way to solve problems.

If that doesn’t tell you he’s got the liberal Washington bug, nothing will.
