Romney backs Obama auto decision, praising 'backbone'
The Hill - Briefing Room Blog ^ | March 31, 2009 | by Michael O'Brien

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) backed the plan for GM and Chrysler put forth yesterday by President Obama, the candidate Romney may face in the 2012 presidential election.

"I think a lot of people expected the president just to cave, write a check, and just hope for the better," Romney said Tuesday morning on CNN. "I think he's expressing some backbone on this."

Romney grew up in Michigan, where his father was governor and, at one time, chairman of a now-defunct auto company. The former 2008 presidential candidate, though, was also sure to tout his own calls for bankruptcy last year, when Chrysler and GM first approached the government seeking support.

"That's something I think he should have said months ago," Romney claimed. "There were a number of us who said bankruptcy or a bankruptcy-like process was something that was needed to get GM and Chrysler on their feet again."

Romney, who won the Michigan Republican primary during the 2008 nominating process, called for the use of the "club" of bankruptcy to force the restructuring of the state's native industry.

"If the parties want to do it voluntarily — and apparently, at this stage, it's looking like they haven't been able to — then you're going to have to have that kind of a club to be able to have these companies restructure their excessive costs," he asserted.

I agree with Romney’s decision. Bankruptcy is intended to help companies restructure debt. I think GM should have filed Chapter 11 a long time ago.

I agree with you; maybe Romney agrees that we ought to force the automakers into bankruptcy so they can shed the Unions. But I’m afraid thats not what the Commie Obama has in mind.I doubt he’ll upset the Unions, when it comes down to it.

Agreed. Palin-Bachmann 2012. Two women have more stones than the men in the GOP.

Mitt was right about forcing it to BK but wrong to praise O and say that slime O has “backbone.”

Where have all the men with spine gone? Are they all so corrupt or are they just chickified little weasels?

Honest to God, and we wonder why the US is headed over the cliff.

If not them, how about Michelle Bachman and Janine Turner? Two conservative babes with a great bumper sticker....

Mitt can run in 2012, but I will not support him.

I won't, either.

Give me a break. Obama and the Dems are destroying the auto industry. That's not backbone, that's tyranny and Statism.

I have noticed that many people who have had money and/or privilege all their lives (John McCain and Mitt Romney are two who come immediately to mind) seem to need to ameliorate something - perhaps guilt - for having been given so much without having ever earned much of it.

They seem more than willing to use public funds and the force of law to do so. They want to make things "fair", so that they can feel better.

People like Mitt Romney and John McCain are so insulated from the middle class taxpayer, who pays the cost for their actions, that they have no way of knowing or caring about the havoc the wreak when they support this sort thing.

Maybe some of you need to learn to read more carefully. Romney is complimenting Obama on a very specific part of what Obama said yesterday. He is not offering general praise for Obama's plan:

"That's something I think he should have said months ago," Romney claimed. "There were a number of us who said bankruptcy or a bankruptcy-like process was something that was needed to get GM and Chrysler on their feet again."

Romney is saying Obama showed some backbone for bringing up bankruptcy as an option, something the UAW has opposed from the start because it would allow renegotiation of union contracts. And, all you FR conservatives, bankruptcy and the opportunity to reorganize and shed excessive union benefits is precisely what conservatives have advocated from the first.

Romney complimented Obama for considering bankruptcy, which I know Romney has said was the solution for months. Lots of knee jerk reaction in this thread.

So, all of you are opposed to bankruptcy reorganization for GM and/or Chrysler?

What Mitt said...
"I think he's expressing some backbone on this."

What Mitt should have said...
"I think he's trampling all over the Constitution on this."

This should settle the argument that Ronmey should be the GOP’s candidate in 20012. Buh Bye...

Romney is just proving, without a shadow of doubt, what an idiot he really is, and just how BAD a president he would be, not to mention a RINO of the worst kind.

Newt agrees too.
Holding GM accountable isn’t a bad thing.

Mitt also said before time and again, they should file bankruptsy.

See my tag line.

I was never impressed with Romney. After all, his Romneycare brought socialized medicine to Mass. and now it's crumbling

For all his experience with a hostile press up in MA, Romney still hasn’t learned how not to talk right into their traps.
