WASHINGTON (AP) -- Tens of thousands of Americans, from teenagers to baby boomers, soon will get a fresh chance to lend a helping hand in a time of need after Congress voted Tuesday to expand ways for people to serve the country and each other.

The House voted 275-149 for a $5.7 billion bill that takes ambitious steps on public service, including tripling the number of positions in the Clinton-era AmeriCorps program, its largest expansion since the agency's creation in 1993, and establishing a fund to help nonprofit organizations recruit and manage more volunteers.

Congress was sending the bill to President Barack Obama, who often cites his years as a Chicago community organizer for giving him his political start. Obama has made bolstering national service programs a high priority, and in his overall budget proposal has called for more than $1.1 billion for the programs, an increase of more than $210 million.

It's worse than just stealing, it's indentured servitude! And is explicitly stated in the Constitution as a HUGE NO NO!

As the old folks were fond of saying, “We ain’t got a pot to p!ss in, nor a window to throw it out of,” but congress is busy stoking the stove with the few dollars that are left.

I'm sure the GOP apologists will be here soon.

But until then, I'll point out that 70 Republican House members voted for this bill along with 22 Republican Senators.

I'm having my doubts as to whether the GOP can be saved as the party of smaller government and protector of personal freedom. I think a lot of the problem is leadership. Especially in the Senate. This is yet another case where Minority "Leader" McConnell and Minority Whip (or should that be Wimp) Kyl couldn't even hold half of the Republican Senators together to vote against this.

McCain is still going left as hard and fast as he can. Hutchison just sealed her fate for never being an occupant of the Texas Governors Mansion. Hatch was the co-sponsor, so no big surprise there.

Indentured servants.

Forces those in school to put in 50 and 100 hours a year.

Nope. Indentured servants entered a voluntary contract wherein they became virtual slaved for a set period of time in exchange for a large sum of money, or more commonly, free travel to a colony.

The proper term is Corvée
Corvée is labour, often but not always unpaid, that persons in power have authority to compel their subjects to perform, unless commuted in some way, such as by a cash payment; sometimes this was an option of the payer, sometimes of the payee, and sometimes not an option. It differs from chattel slavery in that the worker is not owned outright – being free in various respects other than in the dispensation of his or her labour – and the work is usually intermittent; typically only a certain number of days' or months' work is required each year. It is a form of unfree labour when the worker is not compensated. It is not technically a tax as there is no actual obligation to pay cash or a physical good such as wheat, but – particularly with a commutation option – it operates very much like a tax for all intents and purposes, usually a poll tax.
It's nice to see the part of Stephen Douglas return to its routes with our Slaver-American president. (Obama is not African American. He is not descended from chattel slaves imported to America from Africa. He is a son of a Arab-African student and a white communist mother. His father's clan were Muslim slave catchers.)

Thank you for the correction.

I think I went to the beach the day they taught Corvée and must have been daydreaming when indentured servants was taught.

Very enlightening post, you've nailed precisely what the bill does.

I was aware of this part of you post, but I think I will repeat it:

...[O]ur Slaver-American president. (Obama is not African American. He is not descended from chattel slaves imported to America from Africa. He is a son of a Arab-African student and a white communist mother. His father's clan were Muslim slave catchers.)

I want to work for ACORN.

I think it pays better, plus it's full of crooks so I can confisticate (I like it spelled like that) the money they steal and buy shiny things.

I am in the process of penning a letter to my esteemed Senator, Kay Bailey Hutchison. I will request a leadership position over the local Bann (regiment). I can even have some handbooks translated from the Leistungsbuchs that were laying around after the last group that did this same thing. This time around, our leaders should refrain from calling company units a Fähnlein. The aldermen should use something like “bunch o’ wards”. But I gotta admit, the Obama logo will look pretty spiffy on the Arbeiterjugend pennants.
