Colbert Mocks Beck with the '1031 Project'
NewsBusters ^ | April 1, 2009 | Jeff Poor

It's the en vogue thing to do - to make fun of Glenn Beck now that his star has risen after switching from CNN Headline News to the Fox News Channel.

After Beck was featured in a front-page March 30 New York Times article, the gang at MSNBC's "Morning Joe" got in on the act - then no other than Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert chimed in on his nightly program, "The Colbert Report."

"Nation, I've been so inspired by Glenn Beck's call to action that I'm launching my own democratic experiment - the 1031 project," Colbert said. "It's organized around 10 principles, 31 flavors, four seasons, ten lords a leapin' and 525,600 minutes."

Well Glenn must be doing something right if he’s now their target.

People can say what they want about Glenn and his “doom and gloom” scenarios but from I’ve seen, for the good part of it - he’s been right. I enjoy watching him - he’s sincere whether he’s crying or telling off an Atty Gen. He’s the real deal IMHO.

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” made a video of Glen Beck crying at different times and Joe Scarborough, and the other pundits were cracking up with laughter at seeing Beck cry. They couldn’t make fun of him enough.

They only wish they had his ratings.

Beck was one of the very first (if not THE first) to introduce most of America to Sarah ‘Cuda. He interviewed her on his program months before she became the VP candidate.
I like his show, and I like it better now he’s on Fox.

When Oprah cries, it’s a wonderful and caring thing but if Beck cries, it’s funny and shameful. The real shame here is the idiots in the media. They are enough to make you cry. I’ve seen the ones where Glen cried and it was over our troops and or things to do with children. Gee, can you imagine the audacity of that!

Since I never tune in to CNN, Beck was pretty much new to me when he arrived at Fox. I got turned off by the emotionalism, but I still tuned in. Eventually I got used to it--some of his shows are AMAZING. He has also made fun of his tearing up, he puts shots of Tammy Faye and other sobbing televangelists along with him, so you end up laughing at it.

He seems like someone who hit bottom and isn't at all embarrassed by a few tears.

He is very different from Rush, who is old-school stiff-upper-lip.

Love them both, and I'm sure Rush is a little envious at Beck's dynamite usage of whiteboard and Sharpie...Beck would be a crackerjack high school math teacher! Rush doesn't talk much with numbers, you can't do that on radio and he's said as much.

I'm on Rush's 24/7, listen to him almost every day. Now Beck is on my DVR.

I have listened to Beck on radio for years and used to tune into his headline news show. What most people do not understand is that Beck is a comedian at heart. I find his radio show to be quite funny and his TV show is funny too. He travels around the country giving stand up shows that combine humor, politics and emotional stuff. If you watch his show with the understanding that he is an emotional guy who is not afraid to be real then it all makes sense. I for one am glad to see a show where someone is just being himself and basically a regular guy.

I can’t listen to him all the time, but I tell you this, he’s got passion for what he does. I tell my daughter that a hundred years ago, a man would get in a bar fight over his politics...people really cared and thought that it mattered, and if you didn’t like Ted Kennedy, you worked to get him thrown out. Today, most people don’t look beyond their own 401K statement to determine their politics, right and wrong be dammned. Good for Glenn to kick and scream until people take notice, and the ones who gun for him are political midgets.

true, many now sadly do not care, .
Ever watched the news when they report the market and it is up they have actually cheered and clapped but when it’s down they report with a sad face.

to them it is about them and nothing else. They do not care for the country but only themselves, Beck comes along and now he is up there in ratings they the left will do anything to attack him.

It is good to see someone who cares and I wish more of us would get the message out about obama and the left because the media are not.
If I got the message out to ten people and then they told each ten people imagine how many would know about the left and obama/wife.
Millions in a few weeks

,Many of the older folk in the north east who are Catholic by the way vote Dem because they think still the Dem party is that of JFK
They do not understand they the left now wants homo’s to marry, weak military, let illegals stay, high taxes, contraceptives for out daughters at middle school, give in to our enemies etc etc etc.

What’ up? Glenn’s ratings.

Colbert doesn’t bother me that much. He’s a comedian. He knows this. I have only seen him a few times, but he’s poked fun at both sides.

This is publicity. And any publicity is good publicity right now if it’ll get more people watching my Glennie.

I think of the Dear Dead Days when I was a kid, and being a Conservative was like being a leper. Without talk radio or the internet, you felt like you were the only one, and change was hopeless. That is what the Left really fears, and what freaks them...Conservatives and patriots know there is hope, and that there are lots of us.

Robert Heinlein said "You can't conquer a free man, a man whose mind is free and who wants to know. You can't conquer him...the most you can do is kill him."

Is it just me, or is anyone else just a bit suspicious about Glenn Beck?

Out of nowhere, the guy is picked up by CNN, a notoriously liberal network, then after a short time switches to FOX. His big claim to fame seems to be that he is extreme and somewhat reckless, and a big loudmouth.

That’s not “conservative” in any true sense. This doesn’t mean that it’s not sometimes good to have somebody scream as loudly as Keith Olbermann, so that they can get drunk and scream at each other in a bar.

But from a conservative point of view, Beck doesn’t speak for me. He is somebody that liberals appointed to speak for me.

Those who even rhetorically wallow with swine end up getting covered in mud.

I couldn't disagree more. I think Glenn Beck is uniquely appealing for the same reason that Sarah Palin is appealing (OK, not for ALL the same reasons): He's genuine.

Our government and media are so chock full these days of self-important narcissists that when someone like a Glenn Beck comes along he is immediately identifiable as different. Glenn is, as he often says, just a regular guy who is telling it like he sees it.

He is also very quick-witted. His radio show sometimes has me crying with laughter, and his TV show has been hilarious at times, too. Who else has the non-PC guts to lampoon Barney Frank the way Glenn has? His "birthday celebration" for Frank the other night was great, and a couple of the implied jokes that he slipped in were priceless.
