Brandon Craig was accused of killing three teenagers in the East Mountains in 1999.

A jury just came back and found him not guilty on all charges.

From AP: A man accused in the fatal shootings of three teenagers in the mountains east of Albuquerque nearly 10 years ago was found not guilty Wednesday of murder and other charges.

Brandon Craig, 29, had been accused of gunning down Matthew Hunt and Kevin Shirley, both 17, and Luis Garcia, 16, as they were returning from a graduation party on May 29, 1999.

Jurors deliberated for two days before reaching their verdict Wednesday. Craig had faced three counts of first-degree murder and three child abuse charges.

The victims' family members cried as the verdict was read and then quickly left the courtroom. Craig showed no emotion but his parents embraced.

These killings occurred less than a mile from where I lived at that time. The teens were leaving a graduation party when their car was stopped. They were killed at point blank range with an assault rifle whose clip was emptied into them and the car. One of those killed had been paralyzed from a previous auto accident and was in a wheelchair. The physical evidence had largely been destroyed so it came down to the witness testimony and contradictions between their stories.

“Witness” statements were wildly contradictory and changed over time. Gun was supposedly cut up and the pieces disposed in different locations. The murders were hideous but it sounds as if the jury was faced with the contradictions, had reasonable doubt and couldn’t find him guilty. If he did it and is still doing drugs, he’ll likely be done in by a bad drug deal. What goes around comes around.

The lead prosecutor for this case at the DA’s office is a good friend of mine. I never talk to him about his current cases (he wouldn’t talk about it anyway) so I don’t have any inside info but I’m betting he’s pretty stressed out about this. I hope everyone here can throw a little prayer his way too along with one for the family’s of the victims.
