Two local men forced a runaway teenager to have sex on film in exchange for gifts or money, law enforcement officials say.
County detectives began investigating when a 16-year-old boy appeared at a juvenile court hearing March 24 with Joseph G. Burns, 28, of Throop, with whom the teen had been living for a few weeks.
At the hearing, Mr. Burns lied under oath about his age, investigators say. After he was charged with perjury, Detective Michelle Mancuso interviewed him.
“I had an idea there was something going on,” the detective said. “What is he doing hanging around with a 16-year-old?”
The detective said Mr. Burns told her he had filmed the teen having oral sex with another man — 85-year-old Scranton resident Joseph “Pops” Gyuriska — and that the movie was saved on his computer.
Police seized a laptop computer from Mr. Burns’ Throop home during a search later that day and retrieved the movie Mr. Burns described, according to investigators.
Officials say the boy is now in protective custody. The Times-Tribune does not publish the names of alleged sexual assault victims.
Mr. Burns, of 173 Dunmore St., Second Floor, Throop, was arraigned Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge John Pesota on nine criminal charges, including making and possessing child pornography, endangering the welfare of children, sexual abuse of children and promoting prostitution.
County detectives also obtained an arrest warrant for Mr. Gyuriska, of 840 Capouse Ave., Scranton. He is wanted on charges of unlawful contact with a minor, endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors and related counts and could be arrested as early as this weekend, officials said Wednesday.
The teen told investigators Mr. Gyuriska bought him a pair of Nike Air Jordan sneakers in exchange for oral sex. In later interviews with police, the teen said Mr. Gyuriska had to get permission from Mr. Burns to have sex with him, and that Mr. Gyuriska either paid Mr. Burns $50 or bought them clothing and shoes in exchange for sex.
He also said he did not want to have sex with Mr. Gyuriska and did not want to be filmed, investigators said.
Mr. Gyuriska spoke with investigators on March 24. They said he admitted he has had sex with Mr. Burns and the teen, and that he often gave them gifts of clothing or shoes or paid them for sex.
It was not clear late Wednesday whether either Mr. Burns or Mr. Gyuriska had attorneys. Mr. Burns is in Lackawanna County prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.
