Should President Obama have the power to shut down domestic Internet traffic during a state of emergency?
Senators John Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) think so. On Wednesday they introduced a bill to establish the Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisoran arm of the executive branch that would have vast power to monitor and control Internet traffic to protect against threats to critical cyber infrastructure. That broad power is rattling some civil libertarians.

You posted MOTHER JONES!
You must be a troll.
I’m reporting this to the moderators.
I’m not clicking on this trash.
I’m not reading this.
(channeling the FR Ostrich Brigade before they arrive)
These people prove themselve sinsane time after time.
Not a good idea with this bunch. They seem to have a penchant for proclaiming anything they don’t like a crisis. Health care crisis, global warming crisis, etc. None of these is really a crisis, but it is all about seizing power.
I fear as soon as Obama loses popularity, they will “discover” a threat to vital information systems and say they need to shut down internet dissent.
Where now is the Jackass Party which was all incensed that Bush was spying on conversations that crossed a national border?
isn’t it ironic that so-called “liberals” and “progressives” are so anti-freedom.
Yes, I admit it. I am a troll. At least my kids think I am a troll: especially at bedtime.
An earlier troll joined in 1998 and now one in 2000. I am impressed.
If Bush had suggested this there’d be demonstrating in the streets...college campuses would be burning down...but it’s Obama so..YAWN.
Senate bills No. 773 and 778.
I see the “bobbsey twin” from Maine supports it too.
I subscribed to Mother Jones, The Nation, and Rolling Stone 30+ years ago.
Then I grew up. Voted for Reagan shortly thereafter.
Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) needs to be tossed out with the trash.
However, this does give me one more selling point to use with my wife when trying to justify a ham radio. ;>)
Taking out our communication links is one of the worst things to do in any kind of emergency.
I guess it goes without saying that this proposal is completely unconstitutional. They won't stop at controlling the Internet in a “emergency” they will find a way to do it right now once this passes. After all, everyday is an emergency to Rahm and 0.
(”Yes, I admit it. I am a troll. At least my kids think I am a troll: especially at bedtime.” ROTFL!!!:))
Well..., this increased monitoring of all the citizens of this country has been growing for a long time, and *especially so* since the 9/11 attack. That should be obvious to anyone.
It looks like we’re well on the way to being monitored and tracked and controlled just like the Bible indicates is going to soon be happening in the world. This sort of thing hasn’t been surprising to Christians who know what the Bible says about it (even if it is still a disturbing thing...)...
These people don’t believe this contry belongs to the people.
They are control freaks and statists.
God save us from these idiots.
oops. That’s better.
Not only that — but during a real crisis, you WANT news to spread. I recall trying to reach foxnews.com, cnn.com, abcnews.com, ... anything....during 9/11.
