Bachmann warns gov't creating 're-education camps' @ 1:04 pm by Michael O'Brien

The government is at risk of creating "re-education camps for young people," Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.).

"I believe that there is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service," Bachmann said on a Minnesota radio show Monday. "And the real concerns is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically correct forums."

Bachmann was talking about the Serve America Act, passed recently in Congress as a way to encourage community service for young Americans.

"It’s under the guise of — quote — volunteerism," she said. "But it’s not volunteers at all. It’s paying people to do work on behalf of government."

Bachmann has been anything but quiet during this term in Congress, with her outspoken remarks often drawing the ire of liberal bloggers.

Representative Michele Bachmann ...
ROCKS!

IMO, Michele Bachmann needs to be added to the 'FR rules'.
She's a babe ;-)

Let's work from the truth here.

Bachmann is quoted as saying; "And the real concerns is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically correct forums."

That is just not true.

HR1388 has bothered me for a long time, so I did the unthinkable...I read it.

There is enough buried in its 260 pages to piss us off (eg. money for Acorn-type organizations) but there is absolutely no language that makes any particpation mandatory for any age group.

The implementation of the school-age volunteer corps requires:

That the state and local educational regulating boards must buy in...

The States must research and select new 'campus' sites every year...

A pre-existing local not-for-profit must apply to run the program and must put up anywhere from 15-50% of the monies (year one to year three).

The ambitions for student participation are very low, maxing out at 250,000 in year 2017.

There are other potentially disturbing but in reality, I think, limiting factors...in particular the requirement that at least 50% of the student "participants" be disadvantaged.

You couldn't find five "disadvantaged" youths in my district. You would find even fewer parents in my district who would have their kids spend the summer at a SUNY Campus with ghetto kids.

My opinion is that HR1388 is designed to function only in the inner cities. That is troubling on many levels and may be the first step toward the slippery slope or the creation of an 'inner-city' born and trained political corps but it is not what is described by Bachmann.

“Palin-Bachmann 2012”

Wouldn’t THAT be a pair to draw to? Each one has more cojones than Hussein does, and they actually love their country.

Each side has accused the other of planning this since Nixon was President. I guess I will believe it if they come drag my grandkids away. Until then it is tinfoil talk IMO.

I thought Public Schools were already re-education camps???

If only more people were this with it.

If only more people stood up for their values in the public arena instead of cowering in home and private schools.

If your public schools are government indroctination centers, it's because you allowed them to made into such.

The culture war must be fought in the public schools. When you run from the fight, we wind up with jackass abortionists being invited to speak at Notre Dame.

Maybe so, but I don’t remember hearing all this stuff about “mandatory volunteerism” before.

Maybe I just wasn’t paying attention then.
