Orlando Sentinel ^

The woman who killed her son at a Casselberry gun range, then turned her gun on herself, left a notes at her home apologizing for sending "my son to heaven and myself to hell.''

In a report on WESH-TV.com, Moore addressed one note to "King," and wrote: "I had to save my son and send myself to hell."

Two notes are signed "Failed Queen," according to the report.

Evidence from Monday morning's horrific murder-suicide -- captured on security video from the gun range -- indicated Marie Moore, 44, intentionally shot her 20-year-old son, Mitchell, while they apparently were enjoying target practice. Both are from Altamonte Springs.

There is a video of the actual murder/suicide at the link. I won’t watch it.

There are restrictions about gun ownership in some cases of mental incompetence, but that would not stop a person from renting a gun at a shooting range, McNeil said.

Groan................

Exactly, most ranges will not allow you to rent if your are at the range by yourself...

I was surprised it was on there, I didn’t realize it actually showed the shooting (didn’t imagine they would post it). It doesn’t really show anything gory however, as it is jumpy (not every frame shows). It’s disturbing of course.

Many years ago (1972) I worked at an indoor range. Two young men came in and one rented a .38 and bought a bag of reloads. His friend sat down in the visitors area and we suppose nodded off to sleep. About 35 rounds later the range officer was shocked to see a young man flying backwards out of his partitioned area. The fellow had turned the gun on himself and put a wad cutter in his heart.

Later the police talked to the friend who said. Yeah he had talked about shooting himself since his girlfriend had broken up with him.

Jesus Christ save them both.

I guess or hope she had diminished insight. I don’t want her to be damned.

Thanks for the ping.

Hopefully those audio tapes will give some more insight.

I doubt she was “banned” as some reports say. To rent, you go in there, fill out a form and select the gun. There is no computer entry or db checked.

She was Baker Acted in 2002. Assuming this is the last time she actually went to the range I doubt anyone working there was there in 2002.

I got to be the unlucky guy standing next to a suicide attempt at a gun range last month. Not fun. They took the guy away on a stretcher, and thanks to hospital privacy laws, I can’t find out what happened to him. The local paper had a blurb about the incident, then nothing.

I bet she had financial troubles and felt she couldn’t provide for him. Yes, I know he’s 20 and could fend for himself, but she wasn’t rationale.

Nobody knows. Nobody can even conjecture as there has not been any hint of bad blood between them that has surfaced. This was just totally out of the blue.

It has been said mom was having mental issues, and that she had even been "banned" at this range. However, I find it hard to believe her son would take her to the range for some mom/son time if he even had the slightest hint she could be capable of doing something like this.

Yeesh. I was unlucky enough to watch a guy jump to his death by jumping from a 10th floor balcony during Spring Break in Daytona in 1978. Head first into an alley. I agree that suicide is probably the most selfish act anyone could do.

You can check the police blotter for the call to the range. You can probably dig a little and get his name that way.

Bet the range knows. At least their lawyer.

People are suddenly going nuts all over the country... it is almost like a story out of the X-Files.
