Was he ever sincerely a Christian? Or was the relationship with Rev. Wright’s congregation one of political expediency?
From his statements about America in Europe, it seems like he does not see anything particularly special about American Christian culture. He likes to emphasize that the U.S. is not a Christian nation, in his words. That’s suspicious. I can’t imagine a sincere believing Christian, well-educated about Christianity and Christian civilization, wanting to downplay America’s unique Christian heritage and foundations in the Judeo-Christian moral tradition. Why would he do that? Either he doesn’t understand it or he doesn’t really believe it. It’s gotta be one or the other.
