WASHINGTON -- Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, according to current and former national-security officials.
The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, these officials said, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls. The intruders haven't sought to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure, but officials warned they could try during a crisis or war.

Gasoline powered generators may be an option to look into as well. If a person went the gasoline generator route, they would need to ensure that they would always have access to a supply of gasoline. I suppose it depends on what is the most cost efficient in the long term and also by what can be sustained indefinitely if supply lines are cut.
You are right. If lucky 1000 watts for 6 hours on the sunny days.
But if we are in tough times, without an electric grid, this will power maybe a computer/monitor, radio, satellite receiver, medium size flatscreen TV, ham radio gear.
I don’t even see this 1000 watt peak system running a well pump. It’s just allows one to maintain communication and some entertainment to bide ones time.
A really good deep cycle battery would provide 75 Amp-Hour rating.

12 batteries times 12 volts times 6.25 amps for 12 hours equals 900 watthours. Evenly spaced out over 12 hours you can draw 4 amps at 120V.
Big difference the power consumption at 240V and 12V.
Trying running your oven or air condition off of those.
Also after three years of fully charging and discharging those batteries every day, you are not going to have half that capacity left.

I have a pond in the front, so at least I can flush the toilet if we’re without electricity. So, I’m not going to fuss with any outhouse.

How much did your hand pump cost you? Did you have it installed?
The pump we had installed a couple of weeks ago was $500.00. They also had a $200.00 option, but I wanted the best they had. I do not know what the difference is, I just didn’t want to take any chances. I do know that this one does not have to be used on a regular basis to prevent the leathers from drying out, nor will it freeze. It goes down over a hundred feet.
I am lucky to have a well company nearby that I trust. They are a family company that only does wells, they’ve been here forever, and they even dug my original well back in ‘72 when the house was built.

Exactly. Technology is nice and makes life more comfortable, but one day it will bite us in the ass.
