In Turkey, Obama Reaches Out to Muslim World
The Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, April 7, 2009 | chael D. Shear and Kevin Sullivan

ANKARA, Turkey, April 6 -- President Obama made his most direct outreach to Muslims around the world Monday, telling Turkey's Grand National Assembly that the United States "is not and never will be at war with Islam."

"Our partnership with the Muslim world is critical in rolling back a violent ideology that people of all faiths reject," Obama told the assembly. "The future must belong to those who create, not those who destroy. That is the future we must work for, and we must work for it together."

(snip)

During his campaign, Obama consistently played down connections to Islam, rarely mentioning his middle name, Hussein, or his childhood years in an Indonesian state school. The tactic helped fuel false Internet-driven rumors that Obama, a Christian, had once been Muslim. But in his appearance Monday, the president noted the contributions that Muslim Americans have made to the United States, saying that many Americans "have Muslims in their family, or have lived in a Muslim-majority country."

(snip)

"I know," Obama said, drawing applause from the lawmakers, "because I am one of them."

No he did not. He was waaay overly nicey nice about Islam. But he never said what 0bama the steaming pile said - “I’m one of them”, never bowed down to the Saudi King, and never praised Islam as fulsomely.

I think that Bush said nice things about Islam for political reasons and because he is (too) nice a man. I disagreed with Bush about many things and his niceness about Islam is one of them. But IMO his statements about Islam were because the US was working with Muslim countries.

0bama the steaming pile, OTOH, is quickly trying to destroy the US, not protect it in any way. As imperfect and faulty as Bush was, he was a noble leader and great man compared to the lying steaming pile thug jihadi sympathizer commie bisexual crackhead lying fraud going by the name of 0bama.

Since 0bama and his consort the Black Widow Spider quit going to Jeremiah Wrights’ Church of Hate Whitey, they never attend any church. They aren’t even pretending to be Christians. I suppose at least they aren’t duplicitous about it; unlike Clintoon carrying the huge Bible to church during the Lewinsky stuff.

yes I remember Bush saying that too.

It is true, we are not at war with Islam, just RADICAL Islam

where I dissagree is that Islam does not denounce RADICAL Islam and that makes them complicit, and guilty of aiding and abetting terrorism within their "culture"

WASHINGTON, Jan 8 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday said he wants Turkey to be admitted to the European Union "in the interests of peace," describing Ankara as a bridge between Europe and the Muslim world. "Turkey sets a fantastic example for nations around the world to see where it's possible to have a democracy that co-exists with a great religion like Islam," Bush said at a White House meeting with Turkish President Abdullah Gul.

Bush didn't bow, he just held hands with King Abdullah.

Actually, the “holding hands” thing occurred when they were walking on a path in the garden, and the Saudi king (a portly older man who is not very steady on his feet) stumbled and Bush grabbed him to keep him from falling. The Saudi then held Bush’s hand as they walked back.

However, even if it had been otherwise, holding hands in the ME is a sign of friendship and not of submission. That’s the difference between holding hands and bowing. I don’t know if you saw a video of the bow, but I saw a Spanish video filmed from the side, and Obama rushed over to the king, literally pushing aside a couple of people in the way, and made a deep bow with his hands out as if reaching for the Saudi king’s hand to kiss it. Even the Saudi king looked a little stunned.

I agree that Bush’s approach to Turkey was overboard, although I don’t think that there was any doubt that it was meant to shore up the moderate forces in Turkey. The problem with Obama is that this isn ot one’s first reaction.

BS. I spent five years in Saudi Arabia. Holding hands between men is common and part of being friends. To make up this cover story is just intellectually dishonest. FYI: I have no problem with it.

Obama just restated existing American policy re Turkey joining the EU. I can find many things to criticize him on, but this isn't one of them. Turkey is a member of NATO and has a key geostrategic location that has been made more important with the war in Iraq, Russian attacks against Georgia, and the location of oil pipelines.

In any event, it doesn't matter because Turkey will never be admitted to the EU. The vast majority of EU countries are against it and becoming even more so as Islamic fundamentalism is affecting Turkey more and more.

I didn’t “make up a cover story.” Apparently, the incident was filmed. However, as you will note, I pointed out that handholding is common in the ME and is an expression of friendship, so IMHO it didn’t need a “cover story” in any case, and I didn’t see why you and other people with BDS always bring it up.

There’s a big difference between friendship, even though I think it’s naive and misplaced “friendship,” and obeisance. The latter is what Obama expresses, which Bush never did either in word or gesture.

Here is how the Christian Science Monitor reported it at the time. "Fred Jones, the National Security Council spokesman, said hand-holding is an Arab expression of "friendship, respect and trust."

Abdullah was not falling down or needed a helping hand from Bush. That's a fact. Your story is bogus. Admit it and move on. I have no problem with them holding hands. I do have a problem with people who make up stories to mask the truth.

There’s a big difference between friendship, even though I think it’s naive and misplaced “friendship,” and obeisance. The latter is what Obama expresses, which Bush never did either in word or gesture.

I am no supporter of Obama. I detest him and believe he presents a real danger to this country. However, much of this commotion about whether Obama bowed or not is similar to the same kind of fuss that was generated by Bush's detractors when he held hands with Abdullah and kissed him on the cheek. This is much ado about nothing.

Saudi Arabia is vital to our national interests. This is not about "friendship" or "obeisance," but about promoting our own self-interests. When you import 70% of your oil, which runs our economy, you must have good relations with the world's largest producer of exportable oil and the largest know proven oil reserves [excluding shale oil]. Oil is a global commodity and fungible.

I still believe he never won our state fairly.
remember we had over a 100,000 people voting just from OH and GA,
It had to take Ga’s media to track some of these down and guess what they were liberals, some said they never knew they couldn’;t vote in two states, some said they didn’t vote in two states when they did and some refused to even say anything

Then think of those north eastern folk who have vacation homes in west pal, Ft lauderdale etc and some who live now down here.

Add that to the ACORN Miami crowd / illegals and we have hundreds of thousands of illegal voters.

Has our great Gov(arf) done anything, no not much
I truly believe IN,VA,NC had lots of illegal stuff going on not forgetting NH and PA which refused republicans to see what was going on, and even the black panthers not letting whitey in.
Remember the CNN reporter who asked a guy about how the wait was and he said not bad and then went on to say it was his second time
CNN, just ignores it

Then there was all the illegal money in the way of pre paid credit cards and has the GOP done anything about this.no so we’ll face the same illegal money in 4 years again

In the last few years I’ve read many such articles about Egypt, and also in Indonesia many Christians have been slaughtered, churches burned down,

How much is many? There aren't that many Christians in Egypt and Indonesia to begin with. They do allow Christian churches to operate unlike Saudi Arabia.

the gov also does its best to destroy the few remaining Hindu temples, of which there use to be a great number, since several hundred years ago Indonesia was a Hindu kingdom until the Muslims invaded and forcibly “converted” the local people. Who were mostly Hindu, with some Buddhists and some animism tossed in.

I lived two years in Indonesia. The government is not destroying Hindu temples. In fact, they are being preserved, e.g., Borobadur (the largest Buddhist temple in the world) and Prambanen temple [Hindu] in central Java. I have visited both. One of the major highlights is the Ramayana Ballet in the Pramaban Temple in Yogyakarta which presents the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, performed against the backdrop of the temple walls of Java's greatest and most lavish monument to Hinduism and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bali is also full of Hindu temples.

There is no doubt that Islamic fundamentalism is causing problems, but Indonesia still remains a relatively moderate Islamic country. Alcohol is available; women can drive and govern; churches are functioning, pork can be bought, etc.

I also lived 5 years in Saudi Arabia and two years in Iran and travelled to many other Islamic countries. Indonesia and Egypt are among the more moderate Islamic countries as are such places as the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Oman.

Sounds as they they all pretty much suck.

Plus, you may have lived in Indo but that dooesn’t mean that you were aware of everything that was going on (or before or after). I have read numerous articles on FR and elsewhere of atrocities committed by Muslims against Christiand in Indonesia as well as articles about continuing destruction of remaining Hindu temples. One Hanuman temple was destroyed sometime in the few years.

Obviously Saudi Kingdom is worse in this regard. Bascially, Islam is a scourge on humanity.

And no one in Indonesia has been killed for being Christian (no school girls beheaded?), no churches destroyed, no Hanuman temple destroyed - all in the last few years? And the Muslims didn’t invade Indonesia in the last several hundred years (IIRC around 1400 but I could be off) and forcibly convert the people to Islam which enacting much destruction?

All wrong?

This is what you wrote: the gov also does its best to destroy the few remaining Hindu temples, of which there use to be a great number, since several hundred years ago Indonesia

The government of Indonesia does not have a policy to destroy Hindu temples [of which there are many] and does not condone such violence and destruction.

As I mentioned, Islamic fundamentalism is having an impact in Indonesia. The Bali bombing is just one example. However, that does not mean that there is widespread, government-sanctioned violence against foreigners and Christians, Buddhists, and Hindus.

In the 1960s over 600,000 ethnic Chinese were killed in Indonesia under Sukarno. That's what I call widespread violence.

President Obama made his most direct outreach to Muslims around the world Monday, telling Turkey's Grand National Assembly that the United States "is not and never will be at war with Islam."

Pardon me. When someone comes right out and says they intend to convert me to their false religion by use of the sword, that person automatically becomes my mortal enemy, because I am willing to fight them to the death over that.

Islam is our enemy and the enemy of every human who is non-Muslim. It’s as simple as that.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2227495/posts?page=53#26

And note comment 26 on this intereting thread:

I believe that Obama does share the muslim religion....When he said “My muslim faith” in that interview, he accidentally showed his true face.

Accidentally? How about the New York Times Nicholas Kristof interview that got pulled from the Times website? The one in which Obama was waxing lyrical about how beautiful the Moslem “call to prayer” sounded when he heard it growing up in Jakarta ..... and then he recited the whole thing?

The catch is, the first six or seven lines of that “call to prayer” (called the Azaan or Adhan) is a prayer and a profession of faith. Called the Shehada, those half-dozen lines are the Confiteor of Islam, their Nicene Creed, and Obama knew from his upbringing that reciting that profession, the Shehada, in the hearing of others makes a person a Moslem, all by itself. Once done, one is a Moslem for life. That is what Moslems believe.

Think about that for a while!
