Ninety-Two Years and Counting
American Spectator ^ | 08 apr 09 | Geoffrey Norman

Last Friday, a Fox New panel kicked around the matter of President Obama's remarks at the G-20 meeting where he had characterized the U.S. attitude toward Europe as "arrogant," dismissive," and "derisive." The United States, its President had said, was guilty of a "failure to appreciate Europe's leading role," in world affairs.

This was too much for Charles Krauthammer. In what he described as "a turn of phrase I'm sure I will regret," Krauthammer said impatiently that Europe had been "sucking on the [American] teat for 60 years."

“Anyone can see what’s wrong, but can you see what’s right!” -Winston Churchill

Mr. Obama is your typical, garden variety uber liberal. Everywhere he looks, he sees problems...and the United States...the most generous nation in history...is the reason for those problems.

The president’s view of the world is myopic.

In the 20th century Europe was devastated by two world wars. It was impacted by the demonic presence of Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Quisling, Pilsudski and others. A feckless royalty was dying off. A colonial system was barely paying its way. Economically, Europe was broke while class stratification hardened. Anti-Semitism and ethnic antagonisms were rampant. Thus there is little wonder that the post-WW II generations felt they had been cast adrift amidst a sea of sorrows. Given the generations of government that have vowed “never again”, European nations have preferred to survive on their knees rather than stand on their own two feet.

When your only tool is a hammer, (and sickle) then every problem looks like a nail.

I loathe people, especially the 50+ crowd, who ramble on about the wonderful lifestyle and generous government benefits that the European nations provide for their citizens.

I remind them that the reason they have this lifestyle is because:

1) Marshall Plan rebuilt Europe with extremely high tax rates for Americans

2) US military staring eye to eye with their Russian counterparts.

3) An American economy that took in a lot of European goods so Europe could get their economy rolling.

It’s easy to sip tea and whine about capitalism while someone else is providing you with a comfortable security blanket.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...........

. . . . Krauthammer said impatiently that Europe had been "sucking on the [American] teat for 60 years."

And these are the very people to whom Obama thinks we owe an apology. I'm waiting for the day (and it's coming) when the Euroweenies have wet their beds again and need our help to pull their butts out of the fire . . . . . . . . and we can't come because we have no resources to share and no money to give them.

Then and ONLY then, will the America of the past be appreciated by the oppressed Euroweenies of the future.

Ummmmm . . . . . . 'scuse me but, which 50+ crowd are you talking about?? I'm a 50+ American and, like many of my generation, that sure as h%ll ain't OUR lifestyle. So, could you clarify that for me, please?

I’ve lived in the UK and traveled extensively on other European countries. Those so-called generous benefits are ridiculous by US standards. A 600 SF apartment* and 800 Euros a month plus free healthcare that has waiting periods of up to a year for elective surgery like hip replacements or gallbladder removal.

*my bedroom has more space.

Europe is like a spoiled teenaged kid, constantly complaining about all the rules they have to put up with while living under your roof, but not refusing your money and support either.

My apology-—

I meant the 50+ liberal crowd who most likely would have been first hand witnesses to the events like the cold war etc.

I am surrounded by 50+, stuck in the 60’s, liberals and I sometimes forget that the rest of the 50+ crowd is quite conservative!!!
