Chrysler rolls out SUV after government scolding
Yahoo Finance News ^ | 04/08/09 | Dan Strumpf

Posted on 04/08/2009 6:35:53 AM PDT by Sig Sauer P220

NEW YORK (AP) -- It sounds crazy: Just a week after the White House scolded Chrysler LLC for relying too much on gas guzzlers, the company is heading to a marquee auto show Wednesday to unveil a new SUV. Chrysler insists the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which clocks in at 20 mpg in its two-wheel-drive version and 19 in four-wheel-drive, is a crowd favorite and a crucial part of its lineup.

OK why did Chrysler develop this SUV after being scolded by the Dark Lord?

What else is the Jeep unit supposed to produce?

It takes years for a car to go from a marketing idea to a physical product.

This SUV has been in the works for years.

What are they supposed to do? Throw their investment in the toilet, like the government does?

Doesn’t sound crazy at all. What sounds crazy is constantly making hybrid econoboxes that hardly anyone wants.

They probably already had it in the pipeline, and it was too late to roll it back by the time the Scolder-in-Chief threw his tantrum. Since it was a done deal anyway, why not bring it out and try to make some money?

H**l, if they keep this up, I might re-consider my vow never to buy Detroit cars again.

Development goes long before any of this nonsense came up. Alot longer than the “just think it and it will be so” crowd in DC thinks (see my taglines).

You can’t get three bulky child-safety seats in a Toyota Camry. Perhaps BO will mandate that no family can have more than two children.
The car companies have been through this before during Carter’s abysmal administration, when they built small cars that no one wanted. Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting a different result.

No AP! It’s not crazy for a private company to decide the type of product it sells. What is crazy is that the government is “scolding” private companies. And what is scary is that an increasing number of the population believes that this is within the govt’s purview.

Jeeps are the most unique line made by Chrysler.

But, admittedly, the Cherokee versions are not unique compared to other SUVs.

I own two Jeeps: A Liberty and a Grand Cherokee Loredo. Both get around 19 mpg...but neither have ever left me stranded despite snowy winters and muddy springs and autumns. I wouldn't be caught dead in a clown car (Smart Car) or small hybrid the gubmint wants me to drive because that's exactly how I would end up if I ever got in a collision with one of the heavy pickups and 18-wheelers the predominate the highways around my Va. hinterland.

I have this nice big Dodge Ram 1500 with a Hemi engine and 20 Inch Wheels. After I bought it, I put a twin pipe Flowmaster on it. Linex Liner, Fiberglass Bed Cover, Chrome Step Rails, Chrome Bug Shield and Eyebrows, Chrome Wheel Rims and a chrome Brush Guard. I probably get 13 MPG or 14 at best. You couldn’t get me to trade this for any vehicle that gets 35-50 MPG. If I ever sell it, it probably will be to get another later model one or perhaps a Tundra with similar equipment. Who wants to drive around in a tiny little car? It’s kind of like everytime I see someone driving a PT Cruise, I imagine the driver to be a liberal and most likely a card carrying member of the Teachers Union.

Same with my Wrangler. These nutcases don't realize that some of us NEED such a vehicle. I live in the boonies with 1/2 mile of my own road. This is a wildlife refuge (I'm an active environmentalist, not an environmental activist) and it gets used more as an implement than a toy. Sometimes I barely make it through the snow with both axles locked. Try that with a Prius!

No it doesn’t. After spending a small fortune to develop this model, should Chrysler scrap it to appease the envirowhackos? It’s a Chrysler model that actually sells.

But Chrysler is standing by the Grand Cherokee. It's profitable, recognizable and the No. 2-selling vehicle in the Jeep lineup. Grand Cherokee sales fell by almost half during the first three months of the year, but its market share has remained steady, according to Autodata Corp.

I guess profitable does not mean much to this idiot.

Yeah, but I can't recall exactly when they transitioned from the off-road beast to the cruiser.

Other than the gas mileage (15 MPG tops) I have no complaints with my 2004 Ram 1500 Hemi. I really don't want to drive anything else - especially not a deathtrap little buggy that the gubmint is pushing on everybody.

Man, that does look good! Can you get it with the HEMI?

We have a Buick Rainier with the V8, and it is fabulous to drive. Handling is rather, well, Buick like, but when you need to get out of your own way, it sure will.

That new Grand Cherokee might be a nice replacement.

This obsessive self-loathing mentality, with its attendant guilt over prosperity and personal wealth, is overtaking the county and pressuring all business towards self-destructive decisions. Of course, Chrysler produced a vehicle that people want to drive; they would be idiots not to do so.
