WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In a major departure from previous policy, the United States will join direct talks between U.N. and European powers and Iran over Tehran's nuclear program, the State Department announced Wednesday.
The Obama administration has asked the European Union's international policy chief, Javier Solana, to invite Iran to new talks with the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany, State Department spokesman Robert Wood said.
Washington, which does not have diplomatic relations with Iran, has stayed out of those talks to date.
"If Iran accepts, we hope this will be an occasion to seriously engage Iran of how to break the logjam of recent years and work in a cooperative manner to resolve the outstanding international concerns about its nuclear program," Wood said.
Iran has so far refused Security Council demands to halt its production of enriched uranium, which it has said will be used to fuel nuclear power plants. The United States has accused Tehran of concealing efforts to develop a nuclear bomb, and the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog agency said it has failed to resolve questions about the aim of Iranian program.

There will be serious consequences, in fact Obama may even WRITE A LETTER after that happens.
This administration has no credibility and America is being viewed as cowardly in a dangerous world.
“...There will be serious consequences, in fact Obama may even WRITE A LETTER after that happens.”
The letter would say, “I am sorry you didn’t wipe Israel off the map sooner so I could have blamed it on the Bush Administration.”
He won’t debate Rush, but kisses the Ayatollah’s butt.
I feel safer already (not really).
Good luck, SUCKA!
The decent continues.
I wonder how many concessions we will make to Tehran
When will our leaders remind Obama that America is a Republic and that he cannot just Outsource our sovereignty to the UN and Europe no matter how Narcissistic he is.
Do you think a reminder will stop Obama from doing anything that is detrimental to the United States of America?
No but they can at the very least let their opposing views be heard....
I don’t hear one peep from Republicans in Congress about how Obama’s actions are underming this Republic. Nothing at all they act as if Popularity trumps the Constitution.
“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape”. 1Thessalonians 5:3 !!
Mark my word!

This Kenyan is a dangerous fool...and that’s the worst kind.
Oh, PLEASE, talk to Iran?! What a freaking joke!.
It will work out about as well as Madeline Albright talking to North Korea! And, believe it or not, she still THINKS she is smarter than most people even after being mistaken for the cleaning lady.
Exactly blame Bush... and the media don’t even ask him a tough question regarding this... I remember there was correspondance between tehran and Obama when he got elected is this the culmination of the effort.
Moral equivelancy and this idiot visits the troops in Iraq one day and sits down with the people responsible for hundreds of American soldiers deaths the next...
What is going on in this world?
“If Iran accepts, we hope this will be.......”
The key word here is HOPE. More liberal thinking: hope, feel, want, etc.
I HOPE I win the lottery big time.
Sounds like a card at Somecards.com. "When you care enough to hit send."
Meanwhile the Obama Administration still refuses to meet with (and debate) Rush Limbaugh.
They never met any enemy dictator who’s boots they wouldn’t lick.
He can because no one is stopping him. Yes he can!
