It has become ingrained among Jews brought up in the Reform branch of the faith especially that voting for liberals represents a good work since liberals were “compassionate” and did so much “social good.” They just need to be shown that just the opposite effect results from redistributionist policies. Encouraging dependency is not doing good works, it is enslaving the poor.
BTW, I believe you got the quote right. My memory isn’t what it used to be!
It’s interesting, though, because so many Episcopalians nowadays are knee-jerk liberals as well.
