Marine fights to wear dress blues at high school graduation

Marine Pfc. Garrett Miles-McCarthy graduated from boot camp in San Diego only last month but he is already in his first battle: against his hometown school board.
The 18-year-old wants to wear his dress blues uniform at his high school graduation ceremony in El Paso, Texas. He finished his coursework in December and immediately shipped out to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.
School officials have said no, that all grads have to wear cap and gown, no exceptions. The mayor, a local congressman and others are backing Miles-McCarthy, who says wearing the uniform will show his pride in being a Marine and his support for his father, a career soldier bound for Iraq.
The school board will take up the red-hot issue Tuesday, the same day Miles-McCarthy is set to return to duty for advance training.

If the rule is that everyone wears a cap and gown, then everyone should wear a cap and gown. If you let a Marine wear dress blues, then the next thing you know you will have transvestites wanting to wear blue dresses.
He should wear the dress blues under his cap and gown.
The uniform of the day, soldier, is ... Cap and Gown.
I dread graduation season for this reason: everyone thinks they’re special and want to stand out like a sore thumb. Wear the uniform under the gown and be silent.
Maybe he should write to former President Bush in Crawford, Texas to speak on his behalf. I can’t understand the school board’s reason to not allow the dress blues.

Does the Corp teach Marines that they can do anything they want to do? Or do they have to follow the rules?
Wear the uniform under the gown like all the others! At the completion of the ceremony remove the gown and have a good time like all the other students.
The school board could simply state that the appropriate dress for the graduation ceremony is either the cap & gown or a military uniform if you have proof of current enlistment. Then you won’t have the problem of “other” groups trying to wear strange outfits just to stand out from the crowd.
Not a soldier.
If he wants to wear dress blues, then he should volunteer to be part of the color guard. He could wear his uniform during the flag presentation then get into his cap and gown for the remainder of the ceremony.

If he’s just finished boot camp then he’s familiar with the term ‘uniform of the day’. Well, the uniform of the day for graduation is cap and gown.
I noted at one high school graduation back in the USA a few years ago I witnessed, the speeches and talk were all liberal, there was no prayer nor pledge of allegiance nor national anthem, 80% of the instructors were overweight liberal women there up on the dais--I thought they were going to crash through the floor all sitting bunched together on these little folding chairs barely suppporting them, nearly 90% of the awards went to females in the HS class, who themselves went on to give liberal speeches.
I thought to myself Hey! FOR SURE there are some MEN (and maybe some women) in this graduating class of 2004 who have joined the US military and this summer will ship out to Iraq or Afghanistan or Korea. Why does not this foolish school let THEM stand up and get a round of applause and some recognition for THEIR accomplishments (and future danger)?? And this was in a relatively conservative part of the US.

My thoughts exactly. Wear it under the cap and gown. It’s only for one hour. Then take it off after the ceremony. Some battles are worth fighting. This one serves no purpose.
nice idea but won’t work..too many groups would bring “doctors notes” saying, hey, anatomically they’re a guy, but really they’re a girl..(read: discrimination suits)

Trust me, if you make an exception for Service members, you will end up with exceptions for homosexuals and transvestites and Goths and Punks and all other forms of fashion depravity.
The uniform of the day is a cap and gown. There ought not to be any exceptions, otherwise why have a "uniform" at all. He earned the right to wear his dress blues, but only when it is appropriate. He also has earned the right to wear a cap and gown. He should wear that "uniform" with equal pride and not try to stand out from the crowd.
What a laugh, I bet no flag ceremony or pledge to the flag!
My grandson’s last event did not even have a flag in sight for the Christmas program...I inquired and was told it was not part of assemblies any more in that PUBLIC School.
