Somali Pirates, U.S. Navy in Tentative Deal, One Pirate Says
Bloomberg | April 11, 2009 | Dick Schumacher

Posted on 04/11/2009 12:46:09 PM PDT by Zakeet

This story comes from Bloomberg -- which we cannot excerpt.

However, we can provide our own summary of the general gist of the article which is that one of the pirates has claimed both sides have agreed to a prisoner exchange -- our captain for four of their outlaws. The article goes on to warn that as of right now, this is by no means a done deal.

You can read the article HERE.

One for four.

Never negotiate with pirates.

Obama is a surrender monkey.

Dangerous precedent making deals with terrorists. It might be cold, but it would be better to lose one person and take out all the pirates with him than to make deals. They now have the incentive to keep taking hostages.

Make the swap, then kill them all.

"Pirates" cannot be considered a credible word in this day and age.

Promise them anything, but kill the four and whoever takes charge of them as soon as the captain is safe. Then destroy their bases.

I can dream, can’t I?

The agreement would include the paying of a “small” ransom, Da’ud said, declining to be more specific.

No. They give back the captain and they get to go free with their mangy hides intact and nothing else. That should be the only deal on the table.

How many will die this weekend on the highways of America?

We don’t impose a 10 mph speed limit to save them, nor should we bargain with pirates to gain the life of a hostage. Sometimes people die. It is sad, but not as sad as giving up freedoms for all so one can live.

I wonder if the captain and his family would agree with you on that. There's no rush on this. Wait the bastards out and get the captain back without ransom. Hell, a couple more days of bouncing around in that boat and we could probably get them to give back the captain and pay a fine as well.

Oh, the pirates are negotiating...that Sternly Worded Letter from the White House must have really sent shivers through their timbers.

I understand that Kim Jong Il is quaking in fear over the prospect of a Harshly Toned Letter arriving from the United Nations over his recent ICBM foray.

Nice. Deals beget more raids on shipping and hostages for the lucrative ransom "business model."

I just don't know what to say. I long for the days of Ronaldus Magnus.

I doubt there's really any ransom. This seems like an attempt by "Da'ud" to save face.

At least two problems.

One: they agree to pay a “small” ransom, whatever that means. Bad idea. Bad precedent.

Two: There are 16 other Americans who have been captured by the pirates, mostly as a response to this standoff. What happens to them?

I still say we should trade Obama for the Captain.

No I would hope they wouldn't. But a nation can't make its decisions based upon a families concerns.

There's no rush on this

Yes there is.

A clear and devastating message must be sent to these animals, that their actions will result in them getting their asses kicked.

End result: they will think long and hard before messing with us again.

Your solution is typical liberal BS that gets more people killed. It's the Carter solution.

$2 million down to 2 MREs, what they hey?

Now after dropping off the 4 Somalis into the life raft and returning the good Captain, we can all continue on our routine schedule.

Then the smoking lamp is lit and 5” gunnery practice open for all who seek to take aim. Targets?

What a stupid deal (if true)

Right. It sounds really plausible given that the pirates already reneged on the original deal -- exchanging the crew's captured pirate for their captain.

Why does the chopper have to pick up those "Somali mediators and elders" (most probably armed to the teeth), in order to pick up the pirates and their hostage, Phillips?

Why not just pick the pirates up and leave Phillips behind in the lifeboat?

And how "small" is that "small" ransom? Smaller than the TARP? The stimulas package? The budget?

Drudge. The early story said American ship and crew. I just checked and I see they now say Italian ship and at least 10 Italian crew.

I’m not sure that makes things any better. It seems to me that by dithering over this crisis, Obama has now succeeded in putting a German hostage and Italian hostages in danger. You could say that it’s their countries who are primarily responsible, but Obama has now managed to get the U.S. involved in the whole business.

What would you have the Navy do? The captain is in a tiny, enclosed lifeboat with the 4 pirates. The only way to resolve it is to find a way to get him separated from them, unless you want to just sacrifice the captain’s life and blow the lifeboat up with all of them in it.

An earlier thread said the captain DID make a break for it over the side of the lifeboat and the pirates jumped in and brought him back while the Navy watched. I guess 0 didn’t want to hurt his somalian muslim terrorist brothers.

But we lost a lot of our advantage with the feet dragging and insipid negotiation.

It seems to me it took some time for the Navy to reach the area. At that point, with the 4 pirates and the captain enclosed in a lifeboat, the only immediate action that could be taken was to blow them all out of the water. It seems many here would endorse that course of action. Sometimes, it's better that cooler heads prevail.

I am dead set against ANY payment or ransom, but I don't think it's foolish to wait them out a little and try to find ways to get them separated from the captain. At that point, we can do what we need to do to them.
