RAMADI, Iraq As the Marine Corps shrinks its footprint in Iraq's western desert, Iraqi community leaders here are publicly voicing worries about what will happen once the Americans are gone.
They fear a wave of corruption and the return of the insurgency that once held sway over the area.
Marines have begun divorcing themselves from the task of advising local leaders, the clearest signal that their role in Anbar province is quickly nearing its end.
An Associated Press reporter embedded with the troops witnessed two cases in a single day of Iraqis a headmistress and a party of businessmen asking for help and being told the Marines could do very little for them.

You beat me to it. Was just about to post this. Finally coming out about what the Iraqis really think about us being there. Its amazing that it comes out now that Obama is in power.
They can count on it. They can't count 0bama doing anything to stop it either. The dems will point to the 'failed policies of Bush' as they abandon Iraq, just like they have for 30 years after they abandoned South Vietnam.
For some reason or another, this sounds a bit like it might have happened in New Orleans.
What should I do? Where should I go? Why isn’t the government bus here yet? I’m hungry! I’m thirsty! It’s Bush’s fault!
Probably a lot of Poles, Czechs, Slovaks would agree (after WW II).
It seems there is a greater (and more realistic) appreciation of our Marines in Iraq than there is in certain corners of our own country...

Bush’s policy was that we would leave there when the Iraquis wanted us to. Obama doesn’t give a damn how he deserts these people.
