Consider the following questions:
Exactly what does it mean to be Catholic? More specifically, what does the Catholic Church teach? And why? These questions are essential! And in my opiinion, the more they are discussed and debated, the better! Can I accept the Catholic Church's teachings I like and reject the ones I dislike? If so, how many and which ones?
Do I have to do my best to obey the key doctrines of Catholicism? All of them or only a few? How much disobedience is permissible?
Does disbelief and disobedience carry any consequences for me? In this life? In the afterlife?
Yes, those are great questions. However, when Barry shows up and they give him awards and honors and lavish him with praise and 97% of the kids cheer for him, the bottom-line answer to all of those questions will be that Notre Dame (and, by implication, the American Catholic Church) no longer really cares about the evil of abortion.
