Pelosi 'We want them registered'
Washington Times ^ | Monday, April 13, 2009 | Editorial

Posted on 04/12/2009 8:27:30 PM PDT by JohnRLott

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, announced last week that she wants to register guns. Her next move will be to try to confiscate them.

The speaker picked a television show with a viewership of 4.6 million to float the Democrats' coming gun-control push. Questioned on ABC's "Good Morning America" about the prospect of new gun-control laws now that "it's a Democratic president, a Democratic House," she responded, "We don't want to take their guns away. We want them registered."

Politicians and bureaucrats routinely claim that registration helps solve crimes. If a registered gun is used in a crime and left at the crime scene, registration supposedly lets the police trace the gun back to the criminal. Though this turn of events might work on fictional TV crime shows, it virtually never occurs in real life. Criminals' guns are rarely left at crime scenes. When guns are left behind, it usually is because a crook has been seriously injured or killed and the police are poised to catch him anyway. . . . .

I just bought a gun this week. I believe it was registered. My name was taken down and the serial number for the gun, then the guy at Cabela’s called in for the background check. Isn’t that “registration”? What more does she want?

Next Month look for Barama to reluctantly ask for restrictions.

That is NOT registration.
They dont call in the serial # and all thay say is John Doe bought “handgun” or long gun” only the FFL has details of the transaction.

Still, that is to close to registration as the Feds can demand records

My 18 years of law enforcement experience qualifies me to comment the following on the above statement:

Mistress Nancy knows that this won't pass. She's just preaching to the crazies in her own choir to keep them quiet. (However, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't remain vigilant. If anyone reading this hasn't already joined the NRA, do so now!)

That by itself is not necessarily registration unless you live in a state that requires handgun registration like CA. Everybody who buys from dearlers (FFL's) go thru background checks and the fed 4473 form.

The paper record remains with the FFL. Not sure what happens to these records if the FFL closes shop.

It is illegal, I believe, for the federales to keep any “instant check” records beyond a short time period. But I would be VERY surprised if they actually destroyed the records as required by law.

Thank the NRA for the Brady instant check law, which is a defacto registration system.

A discussion of why registration doesn't work.

That discussion is completely irrelevant and immaterial.

I'd like Pelosi to point to the Article and Section of the US Constitution which authorizes Congress to legally mandate the registration of privately owned firearms.

Until she can do that, she can go straight to Hell.

I will not comply. Period.

Only three weeks ago, in my state, Michigan, I had to get a pistol purchase permit.
Then, you purchase the firearm, and there are four copies
of the purchase.
One stays with the seller, I get one, and the other two go
to the County Sheriff and the State.
I can’t think of what else they could do to make you
“Register”.
Now rifles, etc. are another thing, for now.
I have a pretty cool one on order.
Also, at one of the local gun dealers, they have a bad-ass
.50 cal for $3600.00.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a thousand acre ranch in Texas to try it out.

Any person that has lost the right to own firearms can not be prosecuted for not registering any firearm in their possession.

We can tell Pelosi to put it to the task....while she is flying overhead on her broom, someone can take a pot shot at her. Then when she and her broom fall to the ground, then we can all look for the gun!

Yeah, every morning I open my computer to see somebody's been shot- usually more than one somebody.

More troubling than this notion of registration is the fact that an elected official could get the 2nd ammendment so wrong.

We need a law passed pronto that says: "If you back legislation or promote a policy that contradicts our Bill of Rights and Constitution in any way, and do so knowingly, you shall be immediately relieved of duty as a representative or senator and stripped of any salary and benefits that might accrue to active service in government.

Because registration doesn't help solve crime, it is important to ask why government wants to register the people's firearms. History provides the answer. In countries from Australia to England, registration has been used to create lists of guns that later were confiscated by their governments.

As Cuban Colonel Bella said to his aide in "Red Dawn," "Obtain form 4473. These will show lists of private ownership."

If a registered gun is used in a crime and left at the crime scene, registration supposedly lets the police trace the gun back to the criminal.

But, if the gun used in the commission of a crime has been stolen, the criminal can be let go and the owner of the gun can be prosecuted.

So, you see, it's a win-win situation. For DemocRATS.
