Was Harry Smith trying to cover for Pres. Obama? Or was he simply expressing astonishment at the bone-headedness of the contemplated move? In any case, the Early Show anchor left no doubt that the notion of appointing Caroline Kennedy as US ambassador to the Vatican was a non-starter non-pareil. Chatting this morning with Bill O’Reilly, a semi-regular Early Show guest, Smith called the floating of Kennedy’s name “too stupid” to be true.

HARRY SMITH: Let me ask you about this. Caroline Kennedy: there’s this story . . .

BILL O’REILLY: It’s unbelievable!

SMITH: Wait, wait, wait. Here’s my question: do you believe it’s true? Do you believe the Obama administration would have floated her name?

O’REILLY: Yes, I do believe it’s true.

SMITH: That sounds crazy. There’s only one place that this has actually been reported, in an Italian paper, right?

I think it is true. Caroline’s name came out early in the campaign, can't remember exactly what she did, nominating committee, maybe. I think she decided to break into politics and this was going to be her start. I am delighted she bombed out, for whatever reason.

The Government Amateur Hour will have long term consequences for our beloved country. He has two years of unfettered control over us. Taking back the House and the Senate in 2010 may be too late to save us from his Socialist policies. Pray that there are some Dems with consciences in the Legislature that will vote against making us all subservient to the all powerful Obama Government.

The current one is Mary Ann Glendon and Corinne Boggs served for four years. So I don't think there's a problem.

I was chatting with my parish priest about the appointment to the Holy See.

He has come to the belief that it would be better to have no ambassador than one who is against the tenants of the Church.

The problem is finding a Catholic. This is an ambassadorship to a sovereign state. The Vatican does not have a religious test. Obama need not name a Catholic, and the Vatican would have no objection to the views of such an appointee. Where this gets dicey is asking the Vatican to accept a Catholic who openly defies Church Dogma. That IS a slap in the face to the Churh.

My guess is that Obama is interested in smacking the Church. Otherwise it would have been very easy to pick any contributor in the Dem party for the post, as long as the person wasn't outrageous, say Sean Penn. But no he is looking for pro choice Catholics to wave his abortion and social positions in the Church's face. Maybe he's looking to start a schism and make John Kerry the new Henry VIII.
