Going Galt!

Going Galt!!

“Tea parties.” “Going Galt.” You’ve probably seen a growing number of references to these in the media, online, and on signs at rallies reacting to new government spending and controls.

The Boston Tea Party was a rebellion against excessive government. Today’s “tea parties” say “no” to spending without limit and the government takeover of our lives. “Going Galt!” If you’ve read Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, you appreciate the parallels between today’s disintegrating world and the events depicted in that prophetic novel. Atlas Shrugged is the story ofhow productive people went on strike, withdrawing their services in protest against a society that damned them for being productive and expropriated the fruits of their labor.

The ideas in Atlas Shrugged can be powerful moral weapons to roll back the forces of repression and irrationality. The Atlas Society is your premier source for information on those ideas. We’ve compiled this page to help you understand the whole “Going Galt” phenomenon.

What is “Going Galt?”

• “Going Galt” doesn’t simply mean getting angry. That would be “Going Postal.” It means having righteous indignation at the injustice of a political system that bails out individuals and institutions for irresponsible behavior and at the expense of those like you who prosper through hard work and personal responsibly.

• “Going Galt” means asking in the face of new taxes and government controls, “Why work at all?” “For whom am I working?” “Am I a slave?”

• “Going Galt” means recognizing that you’re being punished not for your vices but for your virtues.

• “Going Galt” means recognizing that you have a moral right to your own life, the pursuit of your own happiness, and thus to the rewards you’ve earned with your labor.

• “Going Galt” means recognizing that you deserve praise and honor …

No, but you ARE a serf.

Naw, you don't have it as good as a serf

An English serf under the most punitive lord was only obligated to a little over 50 days service to the lord a year. Most were required to work less.

How many workdays do you turn over in taxes?

Sad, isn’t it? But at this point, I still think we’re more like serfs than slaves, for now....but a year from now??????????

“By what right? By what standard?”

Our country is now a country based on an ambiguous standard. Meant to control and minimize the individual.

This country needs a gigantic band-aid rip-off. Sure, it’ll hurt like a bitch at first and will burn for a time afterward but eventually, the wound will be allowed to breath and heal on it’s own rather than hemorrhaging.

It's too late. Too many did too little for too long.

And peaceful little "tea parties" aren't going to change a thing. Your rulers will just laugh at you when you wrap them up and go back to your home and your job and your taxes.

They won't just laugh at you. At a certain point they will start writing down your name.

But as an old-timer — or middle-aged-timer anyway! — I remember how things were pre-Reagan and how friends of freedom were in despair. I think freedom faces its most serious challenges in generations and I don’t minimize the danger. But let’s not declare defeat and surrender just yet. We didn’t in the 1970s and the result was Reagan!

How many workdays do you turn over in taxes? According to Glen Beck yesterday, April 13, was Tax Freedom Day this year. So it's about 100 days a year for government. If you include unfunded liabilities it moves out to August.

Saw it somewhere recently that in terms of direct taxation, people here in CA work until April 20 solely to feed the beast. That doesn’t even begin to count indirect costs and indirect taxation.

STARVE THE BEAST! Atlas Shrugged ping! Thanks for the ping.
I think we need to take it to the next level, though.
What are we going to do to starve the Beast?

The article suggests ending the mindset of acceptance of the statist (looter in AR's term) ideology. That's a good start, but only a start. Concrete actions must follow. The book, which is an allegory, not a blueprint, the characters withdraw from society to a hidden mountain valley. We don't have such a valley, so we need a more realistic plan to "starve the beast". Also, we need to more clearly define who exactly is the "the beast". Some ideas:

I've heard discussion of a generalized credit card strike (perhaps on a focused list of TARP / Bailout banks where people stop paying their cards for a period of time. I haven't seen detials on this.

Hey Jack. Yep, been some discussion about that very subject over at publius's Atlas Shrugged Book Club Thread.Still fleshing out details by smarter people than me. But given the power of the Looters by their control of the Central Bank and creation of fiat money, it is obvious that they control the government and the culture not through tax revenue but CREDIT and YOUR FICO SCORE, the tactical attack path seems obvious. Stay tuned people.

All of you who say, “it’s too late,” — Hey, it’s never too late until you’re DEAD. When they come for your guns and you refuse to surrender them and they shoot you — THEN it’s too late (for you). Until then, it’s NOT too late.

The Tea Parties are THE BEGINNING. They are not an end unto themselves. Stop whining and burying us before we’re dead. Get up off your backside and STAND UP. If all we do is whine about what might have been, we are FEEDING the beast, not fighting it.
