President Barack Obama acknowledged in a major economic speech Tuesday that "times are still tough" and warned that a culture of "instant gratification" had produced neglect of major national problems that wound up undermining the economy.
"By no means are we out of the woods just yet," the president said in remarks at Georgetown University. "But from where we stand, for the very first time, we are beginning to see glimmers of hope. And beyond that, way off in the distance, we can see a vision of an Americas future that is far different than our troubled economic past.
Obama contended that the nation's "day of reckoning" on the economy was caused partly by "a fundamental weakness in our political system."
"For too long, too many in Washington put off hard decisions for some other time on some other day," he said. "Theres been a tendency to score political points instead of rolling up sleeves to solve real problems. There is also an impatience that characterizes this town an attention span that has only grown shorter with the 24 news cycle and insists on instant gratification in the form of instant results or higher poll numbers. When a crisis hits, theres all too often a lurch from shock to trance, ..
Obama's speech, titled "A New Foundation," invoked a biblical parable by saying the nation "cannot rebuild this economy on the same pile of sand."
"We must build our house upon a rock," he said. "We must lay a new foundation for growth and prosperity a foundation that will move us from an era of borrow and spend to one where we save and invest; where we consume less at home and send more exports abroad."

Get ready for 0bummer’s “No Gratification” economy.
WHOSE INSTANT GRATIFICATION?????? Wasn't mine or my husband's. We played by the rules.....and now you're trying to SCREW US.....well....SCREW YOU, you Marxist.
The acting Kenyan acts as if he actually has a clue what he just said. Who wrote the speech he read off the teleprompter?
Who is the Kenyan channeling?
Axelrod?
Borrow and Spend is exactly what he’s doing. He’s borrowing money we can’t pay back, and spending money we really don’t have.

US President Barack Obama speaks on the economy in Gaston Hall at
Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Obama said Tuesday he
saw "glimmers of hope" as America battles the deepest economic slump
in generations but warned of painful choices and more deep job cuts to come.

what crap
Much to do about nothing. He gave a speech of empty platitudes.
There are no words. This guy is living in a different universe that I am. Lord have mercy!
Didn’t O-bozo just get done telling us to go out and spend?
Thanks Obama, please pass the $100/lb Wagu beef appetizers
Imagine a privileged affirmative action narcissitic ADHD cokehead lecturing AMERICANS about short attention spans and instant gratification
I highly doubt that Obama will be one to try to change this.
Good grief! Both pretentious AND blasphemous.
Meaning capitalism neglected the hood.
In truth, it was forcing private companies to give houses, credit, and jobs to people who could not handle houses, credit, or a job.
The private sector economy lost in large part because of government interference for social causes.
Kind of like the guy who called on Tony Rezko to secure his (instant gratification) McMansion purchase.
Holy Crap Does this guy think Fairy Tales are going to seriously rebuild the economy when he is flushing trilions down the drain?
ML/NJ
That about sums it up.....
“instant gratification”
Kind of like a “wet behind the ears” apprentice/community organizer being placed into the position of POTUS before he has accomplished anything worthy in his life.
Fueled your punk ass election too a-hole
Uh no, it comes from large segments of our society believing that they are entitled to whatever they want even if they didn’t work for and earn it.
exactly!!
The rules of qualifications were eased exactly so that people who could not afford houses under the old rules could have the American dream.
Chicago PIZZA anyone?
Here’s some major reasons that fueled the bust:
Freddie Mac
Fannie Mae
JPMorganChase
BankofAmerica
Goldman Sachs
Bear Sterns
AIG
Merrill Lynch
Countrywide
Barney Franks
Chris Dodd
Alan Greenspan
Ben Bernanke
This from someone who’s never governed or run a business previous to this moment?
What a jackass this man is. I have been hard at work the last 30+ years paying for and saving for MY life. How dare he assume I’m over gratified, don’t lump me with you and your friends. I am human you are not.
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,

You are spot on! I include our first affirmative action Pres--ent in that group. Where are your transcripts from Harvard, 0? Or better yet, your birth certificate?
hussein blames everyone but his own marxist/muzzie a$$.

When there was no mention of Congress putting a gun to bankers heads and forcing them to make loans to people that couldn’t pay them back, I stopped listening.
Banks responded by packaging the loans and selling them as high-risk, mortgage backed securities.
When CDA’s started getting traded, and the money lobbyists were shoveling DC’s way kept that market from any meaningful regulation, the mess was on.
This WHOLE thing was the fault of Washington DC. Bankers were making lemonade out of lemons. Repealing Glass-Steagal was the original nail in the coffin. That allowed the Citi-Travelers merger and AIG to be created.
All, and I mean all of this mess, was DC’s doing.
You know, I remember George W Bush saying how he wanted to finally deal with Social Security. The Democrats filibutered everything!
It has been the Democratswho have consistently refused to live within their means.

Some of the points may be true... but the real question is: Is the current administration actually doing anything about it? Or is this just another "attention-span" issue?
I agree. He actually believes that he EARNED the money that was taken away from hard working taxpayers to pay his ‘community organizer’ salary.
EARNING money means providing a product or service that someone else is freely willing to pay for with money that they themselves have EARNED. Theft and coercion are not involved.
“We must build our house upon a rock”
How dare he invoke the words of Jesus to sell his snake oil.
The 0commie’s economy is going to be a real, totalitarian drag on everyone, green depression all the way.
WHOSE INSTANT GRATIFICATION?????? Wasn’t mine or my husband’s.
You know, I was thinking the same thing. Similar to when the teacher makes the whole class miss recess for the misbehavior of a handful of students.
0bama is a Capitalism DENYER.
Yeah like the last 20 years didn’t really happen.
According to ZERO this is caused by people you should now have a Government Institutionalized HATE for...wealth producers.
Instant gratification ... on the part of the government and its sponges.
