Obama: 'Instant gratification' fueled bust
Politico on Yahoo ^ | 4/14/09 | Mike Allen

Posted on 04/14/2009 3:53:09 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

President Barack Obama acknowledged in a major economic speech Tuesday that "times are still tough" and warned that a culture of "instant gratification" had produced neglect of major national problems that wound up undermining the economy.

"By no means are we out of the woods just yet," the president said in remarks at Georgetown University. "But from where we stand, for the very first time, we are beginning to see glimmers of hope. And beyond that, way off in the distance, we can see a vision of an America’s future that is far different than our troubled economic past.

Obama contended that the nation's "day of reckoning" on the economy was caused partly by "a fundamental weakness in our political system."

"For too long, too many in Washington put off hard decisions for some other time on some other day," he said. "There’s been a tendency to score political points instead of rolling up sleeves to solve real problems. There is also an impatience that characterizes this town — an attention span that has only grown shorter with the 24 news cycle and insists on instant gratification in the form of instant results or higher poll numbers. When a crisis hits, there’s all too often a lurch from shock to trance, ..

Obama's speech, titled "A New Foundation," invoked a biblical parable by saying the nation "cannot rebuild this economy on the same pile of sand."

"We must build our house upon a rock," he said. "We must lay a new foundation for growth and prosperity — a foundation that will move us from an era of borrow and spend to one where we save and invest; where we consume less at home and send more exports abroad."

Borrow and Spend is exactly what he’s doing. He’s borrowing money we can’t pay back, and spending money we really don’t have.

Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Obama said Tuesday he
saw "glimmers of hope" as America battles the deepest economic slump
in generations but warned of painful choices and more deep job cuts to come.

People spent money they didn't have for far to long. That attitude has been fueled by a government attitude that disdains personal responsibility.

I highly doubt that Obama will be one to try to change this.

"instant gratification" had produced neglect of major national problems that wound up undermining the economy.

Meaning capitalism neglected the hood.

In truth, it was forcing private companies to give houses, credit, and jobs to people who could not handle houses, credit, or a job.

The private sector economy lost in large part because of government interference for social causes.

When there was no mention of Congress putting a gun to bankers heads and forcing them to make loans to people that couldn’t pay them back, I stopped listening.

Banks responded by packaging the loans and selling them as high-risk, mortgage backed securities.

When CDA’s started getting traded, and the money lobbyists were shoveling DC’s way kept that market from any meaningful regulation, the mess was on.

This WHOLE thing was the fault of Washington DC. Bankers were making lemonade out of lemons. Repealing Glass-Steagal was the original nail in the coffin. That allowed the Citi-Travelers merger and AIG to be created.

All, and I mean all of this mess, was DC’s doing.

Some of the points may be true... but the real question is: Is the current administration actually doing anything about it? Or is this just another "attention-span" issue?

I agree. He actually believes that he EARNED the money that was taken away from hard working taxpayers to pay his ‘community organizer’ salary.

EARNING money means providing a product or service that someone else is freely willing to pay for with money that they themselves have EARNED. Theft and coercion are not involved.
