BELLEFONTE Before he disappeared April 15, 2005, former District Attorney Ray Gricar used his home computer to search the Internet for information on how to wreck a hard drive, how to fry a hard drive, and water damage to a notebook computer.
Tuesday, one day before the fourth anniversary of Gricars disappearance, Bellefonte Police Det. Matthew Rickard released information that raises the question as to why Gricar might have wanted to destroy that hard drive.
Gricar, who was planning to retire in eight months, went for a drive through Brush Valley, toward Lewisburg, on April 15, 2005, and hasnt been heard from since.
What was believed to be his county-issued laptop computer hard drive was found in the Susquehanna River six months after he disappeared, separated from the computer itself, which was also found in the river.
Two FBI labs and Kroll Ontrack, a company that was able to recover data from hard drives on board Space Shuttle Columbia after it crashed, both evaluated the hard drive, but both attempts to recover information were unsuccessful.
The water damage from the Susquehanna River was too much.

Seems like a good wood chipper would do the trick.

It will never be heard from again.
I guess that is the difference between real people and lawyers, we’d know how to destroy our hard drives, we wouldn’t have to look on the internet to begin with.
Yeah, and he shouldn’t have been searching using Google (I wonder if they provided any information?).
I haven’t heard of this case before. Did the guy commit a crime, or did he just disappear?
$10 for a hammer at Home Depot would do the trick.
Into thin air. Poof.
Not necessarily true. There are organizations, government being one of them, that can take a disk from a physically wrecked hard drive and get most, if not all, of the info from it. Take the drive out and dump it in a river or the ocean. That is if you have time. There are other ways if you are pressed for time, but if you think you have a need for that you will have to learn it on your own.
A body was found tonight in the Susquehanna River, a few miles downstream from where his car was found. Could this be him?
