I happened upon this while looking for something completely different. I had no idea illegals were eligible for Federal goodies. What on earth is wrong with our government?

Oh sure. It is why we Californians tried to pass Prop 187 back in 1994, so that we could stop illegal aliens from getting taxpayer subsidized goodies.
We learned a lot of fascinating things from that adventure, including the surprising number of traitors in the GOP at the national level; such as when HUD Secretary Jack Kemp flew out here to side with the illegals, along with his pal Casino Bill Bennett.

Why are you surprised?
Go online and read the California budget. When you finally parse all of the info, you'll realize that about half of it (about 50 billion or so) is really just welfare of some form or another. Translation: transfer payments from those who earn to those who don't.
A vast number of those people are in fact in the country illegally. Why? Because they CAN get the money!!
Welfare attracts clients. The government people get jobs handing out the cash (somebody has to do that eligibility algorithm), the aliens breed new Democrats beholden to the bureaucracy, and the Evil Americans get marginalized.
Everyone wins except us.
You can't be shocked, right?
