DENVER — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has launched an investigation into a rowdy student protest that prevented former Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado, an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration, from delivering a speech Tuesday night on campus.

University Chancellor Holden Thorp said the investigation by the school's Department of Public Safety could result in criminal charges. The Division of Student Affairs is also probing the incident, he said, and that students could face Honor Court proceedings as a result

Usually, punishment for this sort of thing is light to nonexistent. Let us hope this marks a return to common courtesy.

What’s to probe? Look at the video and expell the little nazis who were involved.

“Mr. Tancredo spoke for a couple of minutes until a demonstrator outside the room shattered a window, spraying glass toward the audience.”

Reminds me of the early 1930s Germany. The night of the long knives is coming soon to a town near you.

the usual left acting like commies and NAZIS
they shout tolerance and yet do not tolerate those with another view

Tell me has anyone ever seen conservatives storming stages and throwing insults, food etc at speakers we do not agree with?

I haven’t
funny though that when a radical lefty is confronted on their own they cower like a coward

Damn right it is. I watched the videos. What happened to Tom was nothing less than an intentional attempt to terrorize him, and him personally.

students could face Honor Court proceedings as a result

That should put a scare into them.

1. Allow the speech to be disrupted.
2. Investigate the disruption of the speech.

3. The result is still that the speech was disrupted.

Mission Accomplished.

Did the faculty have a sudden epiphany that the left wing is totalitarian, anti-free speech/anti-American and dangerous? Or simple window dressing?

I think the latter.

Seriously, the investigation is of CAMPUS SECURITY! There are concerns they were too rough on the trust fund babies.

what is so ludicrous about this is if the shoe was on the other foot they would call the protesters Nazi and racist and get away with and probably have them thrown out and have their group banned from the campus.

Tancredo also said that the students were being egged on by professors so there for those professors should be put on unpaid leave (actually a good excuse to save money) and then see if they are guilty of which they are, as for the students then they should be either banned for bringing the school into disrepute or at least have the credits taken away

I think the group who sponsored Tancredo could file criminal
charges. The breaking of the window was enough of an
assault. If the university doesn’t follow through, then those
in the room should file charges.

here’s what UNC just sent out:

Dear Carolina alumni and friends,

Many of you have heard or read about a protest on campus Monday night, and I’m writing to share with you the message I sent yesterday to our campus community. I think you will find that the message speaks for itself. But if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Holden Thorp, Chancellor

Message from the Chancellor: Free Speech at Carolina (April 15, 2009)

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I want to express how disappointed I am in what happened last night when former Congressman Tom Tancredo wasn’t able to speak when a protest got out of hand, and our Department of Public Safety had to take action. Congressman Tancredo felt threatened and left without making his remarks.

Mr. Tancredo was scheduled to speak about immigration. We expect protests about controversial subjects at Carolina. That’s part of our culture. But we also pride ourselves on being a place where all points of view can be expressed and heard. There’s a way to protest that respects free speech and allows people with opposing views to be heard. Here that’s often meant that groups protesting a speaker have displayed signs or banners, silently expressing their opinions while the speaker had his or her say. That didn’t happen last night.

On behalf of our University community, I called Mr. Tancredo today to apologize for how he was treated. In addition, our Department of Public Safety is investigating this incident. They will pursue criminal charges if any are warranted. Our Division of Student Affairs is also investigating student involvement in the protest. If that investigation determines sufficient evidence, participating students could face Honor Court proceedings.

Carolina’s tradition of free speech is a fundamental part of what has made this place special for more than 200 years. Let’s recommit ourselves to that ideal.

Sincerely,

Holden Thorp

This man and the University should receive thousands of letters, show our disgust with their anti-democracy, anti American radical campus!

Send a letter to the Chancellor and ask one simple question....What happened to UNC?

Yeah, the old “we’d rather ask forgiveness than permission” on the part of UNC. The damage is already done, as they knew it would be. Another little bite off the First Amendment, and many more to come.
