However, Fox News debunked this claim weeks ago: "It's just not true. In fact, it's not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S."

I turned on the set and heard Katie Couric hedge the lie on the 90%, she said that “90% of traced guns”, of course she didn’t say that only 26% of recovered guns are traced to the US.
Then she dropped the bigger lie, “Over 2,000 guns sent to Mexico every DAY from US.”
No wonder it’s hard to find guns for sale in the US.

1. Sullivan was speaking at a joint LE conference involving Mexican cooperation.
2. His information source was Mexican LE officials.
3. Mexican LE officials were providing the leads -- i.e. the serial numbers of confiscated weapons. Mexican LE was Sullivan's information source.
How reliable is the information Mexico gave Sullivan? Mexican police and legal officials have made the same statement publicly -- guns in Mexico are coming from the United States.
How can we rely on these Mexican officials the way Sullivan apparently did? Were the Mexicans borrowing acting ATF director Sullivan's credibility to put about a political line of their own?
I've read elsewhere that a) most Mexicans have guns, b) the guns come from non-U.S. sources, c) the Mexican political authorities are making statements contrary to fact about the abundance and provenience of guns in Mexico, claiming they come from the States, and finally, furthermore, that d) Mexican investigators frequently do not respond to U.S. LE's requests for information about seized weapons; i.e. they are releasing info to the U.S. selectively.
So how do we assess the reliability of Sullivan's statements in the light of what else we know?
