Alarmed that a professional golf association proposed to exclude competitors who dont speak English, the state Senate acted today to prohibit businesses in California from discriminating against customers, including refusing them service, based on the language they use.
The Ladies Professional Golf Assn. last year backed down from a policy that would have suspended golfers who do not speak adequate English on the premise that language fluency in speeches and media interviews was critical to the sport's promotion efforts.
The golfers were considered "patrons" of the LPGA, not employees.
State Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) said the policy raised an issue that required changes to state civil rights laws that already protect employees from discrimination based on language.
"I dont understand the connection between speaking English and playing golf," Yee said on the Senate floor. "This is really about protecting our ability to speak the language that we wish."
Yee recalled as a young boy going to a San Francisco hardware store with an uncle who was mistreated because of his lack of proficiency in English.

Is there nothing that our Overlords don’t want to manage and oversee and dictate? Why should the government be involved in golf at all? Leland Yee has brought some ideas over from the old country about the power and scope of government that aren’t exactly American.
Mr Yee needs to be spoken to in a language he does not understand. He needs to have demands made of him in that language that he does not understand. He needs to ............... Oh, sh!t!! What’s the use?????
Personally, even though I speak Spanish as a native language, I make it a point of speaking in English only in all my dealings throughout California.
Bueller?
Bueller?
I teach “language” lessons in Chicago to those who need it...behind a warehouse around 43rd and Racine.
Man! Next they will want to make a law requiring a presidential candidate to show that he/she is a US citizen???!!! Jeezo-petes!
Won't work.
In California residents have the right to ask for a translator when they can’t understand a medical provider like a doctor. I’ve been thinking of asking for a translator so I can understand my Chinese doctor.
Now we’ll get sued because some lazy-a** ILLEGAL couldn’t read the signs.
If they can’t speak the language I CAN’T do business with them and I WILL NOT PAY MY EMPLOYEES TO WASTE TIME TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE F**K THEY’RE TYRING TO GET ACROSS! PERIOD!
SCREW YOU, DEMOCRATS! I’m leaving shortly and I’m taking my tax dollars with me.
DON’T COME TO CALIFORNIA! DON’T DO BUSINESS IN CALIFORNIA!
It’s a sinking ship.
Democrat run, Democrat ruined.
I was wondering almost the same thing. Will businesses now be required to print contracts in multiple languages to ensure that the buyer knows what they are signing and to avoid liability themselves? Where the heck does it end?
As long as the state of California gives complete immunity to businesses from civil cases arising out of the fact that the customer couldn’t understand the instructions, and the state pre-pays businesses for translation services, this cna’t be bad, can it?
Great bumper sticker right there.
I think what you are trying to say is that the California State Legislature meets too much and shouldn't be full time, but should be part time like some other legislatures, namely Texas, which meets once every two years for 140 days.
Right?
well maybe this is a good thing (hahah) I am sick of being placed on hold for 10-20 minutes when dealing with the DMV on the phone. You see I only speak english, I was born here. i do not have the advantage of spanish that gutter language so many illegals speak.
I have found time and time again, when calling the DMV (and also same is true of our public utility PG and E) that wehn ever the wait for operator assistance is more than ten minutes, i hang up, and call back, this time pressing twe (dos) for spanish. without fail, each time, i get a live operator within one minute.
some thing tells me I am discriminated aginst. Why does the state run DMV have so many spanish lines, and so few english lines???
The long waiting period for english speakers compared to the short time for spanish speakers indicates to me that i am treated unfairly!!!
them bastards have gotten sneaky now, much harder for an english person to get thru becuase some places you call now have a voice reconition system rather than simply pressing number keys, so I have to sound spanish to get the faster service.
It would be great if some bilingual folks here did a study of phone wait times at teh DMV spanish verse english. the few times I have called, all proved english speakers are put on hold up to ten times longer, thats a 1000% discrimination!!!!!!
where are my rights!!!!!
Ping!
El Gubernatorio es muy loco in en la cabesa.
