Picture is kiss of death for George Bush prejudice
Herald Sun ^ | 17th April 2009 | Andrew Bolt

SEE this picture? That's odd, because the Sunday Age's editor can't. Unimaginable, she calls it.

Last weekend, her paper began yet another editorial praising new US President Barack Obama like this:

"Imagine if, only a year ago, the President of the United States had visited Turkey, addressed its parliament, then kissed the Prime Minister on both cheeks.

"That might have been considered far-fetched, but so, too, would have been the President's affirmation that his country was not at war with Islam and that being Muslim in the US is part of the fabric of life.

"It is indeed unimaginable that George Bush would have embraced such thoughts, words and deeds."

Pardon? "Unimaginable?" Only to the spectacularly uninformed.

True, Bush as US President never kissed the blokey Prime Minister of Turkey, preferring a happy two-handed handshake when they met.

But check again the photograph. Will this kiss do? It shows Bush bussing the then Prince Abdullah, now King of Saudi Arabia.

So how did the Sunday Age editor come to write this fantasy:

"(Bush's) arms-length policy, bred out of a certain conservative caution and suspicion, certainly applied to being seen to be in too close a contact with Islamic nations, let alone within kissing distance of their leaders."

And how is it also "unimaginable" that Bush could have said that his country was "not at war with Islam"?

Here he is in 2002 doing just that:

"Because this great nation of many religions understands, our war is not against Islam, or against faith practised by the Muslim people."

How is it "unimaginable" that Bush could have insisted Islam was part of American life? Here, again, is Bush:

Typical leftist crapola.

They simply lie as if they spoke the truth. And they don’t care. They simply create their mythology out of whole cloth falsehoods and weave so many lies that they tell each other around their campfires.

Indeed you will spend untold hours of pointless yammer if you argue that they are wrong and even prove it like this article does.

Facts mean nothing and truth doesn’t matter.

We see the results of that in the last election. I just hope it is the high water mark of a national stupidity that will recede.

We can’t abide more idiocy.

I know kissing the other guy on the cheek is a standard greeting in the Middle East, and I’m no serious Bush basher (I’ve got my issues with him, even though overall I’m a fan), but that picture sort of gets my “gaydar” needle off of zero. Ugh

Arms length, huh?

Liberals had fits over Bush’s kiss and handholding.

I went over to DU while the “Obama Bow” issue was going on. Most of the faithful were defending the bow as acceptable and understanding of culture.

There were those, who were pointing out the hypocrisy because of their bashing of Bush for the handholding and kiss.

It is a funny read to see liberals twist and try to parse the ‘difference’ between the two events.

No. That’s ok. If they go to Tiffany’s afterwards and pick out china patterns that’s another story...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if their sensitivity to middle eastern culture is equal, then Bush wins, and by association, so do we. Hands down. Guess why?

The truth is, kissing on both cheeks is a cultural phenomenon, as is hand holding. Bowing is anti-cultural. Islam directly prohibits one Muslim from bowing to another. The faithful should only bow to Allah. An American President should bow to no one, he is the head of state.

Therefore, they are not just hypocrites, they are uninformed hypocrites.

And I am so sick and tired of the “liberal twist”!!! :-( Conservatives have a higher standard of “no twist” and get ignored. Sick and bloddy tired of it.

Concise, but wholly inaccurate.

What evidence do you have that Islam is not "at war with us" or does not want our destruction?

If we were at war with Islam you’d know it. We are at war with a radical, extremist faction of Islam, not all of it.

It is a religion largely trapped in the past and ruled by autocrats who’ve kept their people ignorant, desperate and poor. Once they’ve tasted freedom they rarely go back.

A religion with billions of adherents will get some percentage of radical nuts and ignorant fools, but if all billion of them were at war with civilization you’d be on the front lines yourself.
