Obama White House ordered coverup of religious symbols for Georgetown speech
LA Times Blogs ^ | Andrew Malcom

Posted on 04/17/2009 12:46:25 PM PDT by Scanian

Surprising word today that President Barack Obama's White House asked Georgetown University to cover all religious symbols at the scene of the president's economic speech at the Roman Catholic institution Wednesday.

And the prestigious Jesuit university agreed.

The decision, unnoticed at the time, seems likely to add further fuel to the ongoing controversy over Obama's upcoming graduation speech at the University of Notre Dame, where the Jesuit Indiana campus is plastered with numerous religious symbols.

This includes a mosaic of Jesus Christ covering the entire 14-story southern wall of the Hesburgh Library next door to the speech site in the Joyce Center, primarily used for athletic-related events such as basketball, hockey and raucous pre-game pep rallies. (See photo below.)

An online petition asking Notre Dame to rescind its invitation to Obama has gathered several hundred thousand signatures.

An American cardinal, Texas' Daniel DiNardo, has also expressed strong displeasure with the Catholic institution so prominently hosting a "public figure who has been candid on his pro-abortion views."

And the local Indiana bishop says he will boycott the May 17 ceremonies.

Some Catholic FReeper please help out this ol' Baptist boy: doesn't "IHS" stand for "In Hoc Signo," or "In This Sign," meaning specifically the Cross of Christ? And doesn't its usage hearken back to the Constantine's vision of the Cross during battle?

Somehow, I think the media are getting this wrong, as usual.

Although it hurts me to give them any credit, the media are right on this one.

“IHS” is an abbreviation for for the name of Jesus, being the 1st 3 letters of His name in Greek.

IHS

“A monogram of the name of Jesus Christ. From the third century the names of our Saviour are sometimes shortened, particularly in Christian inscriptions (IH and XP, for Jesus and Christus). In the next century the “sigla” (chi-rho) occurs not only as an abbreviation but also as a symbol. From the beginning, however, in Christian inscriptions the nomina sacra, or names of Jesus Christ, were shortened by contraction, thus IC and XC or IHS and XPS for Iesous Christos. These Greek monograms continued to be used in Latin during the Middle Ages...”

Thank you. The complete phrase would then be “In Hoc Signo Vinces?”

I should think Obama that might think that should apply to him, only with a red flag or crescent as the “sign.”

Another FReeper answered that IHS was "In Hoc Signo,""In This Sign," which Constantine had his soldiers put on their shields. I did some more checking and the full phrase is "In Hoc Signo Vinces," rather than In Hoc Signo. So the first 3 letters of the Greek for Jesus, IHΣOYΣ, as you say, is more correct. Plus, those three letters have been interpreted as "Iesus Hominum Salvator," "Jesus, Savior of Mankind." So, the media have it pretty close but there is a lot more to the subject, it seems.

Ok! I have seen the images of the mosaic. But I have yet to see one covered up!

Don't you believe if that famous mosaic had been covered there would be evidence of that act?

That is all I am asking. Why does this story say it was covered up? I am not defending 0bambi. But if it ain't true then it Ain't factual reporting!

This will be interesting. Will Obama demand that Notre Dame cover up Christian symbols? If not, it begs the question why he wouldn’t do it there, but would ask Georgetown to.

I hope there is a huge protest organized for this. What a shameful disgrace it is to allow him to speak there.

He spent several years around them and he started to acculturate in Indonesia. Those were his formative years, really. That’s why I think he has a soft spot in his heart for Islam which will prove to be an Achilles’ heel to him when the terrorists put him to the test sooner or later.

IHS is a transliteration of the first three letters of “Jesus” in Greek. Being illiterate in Greek, I can’t tell you more.

BTW: Notre Dame is not a Jesuit school.

But Jesuit college presidents, and the Jesuits’ head drone for higher education in Washington, Fr. Charles Currie, SJ, have all come out in support of Notre Dame’s support for abortion.

Wheeling Jesuit University declared its support for abortion in 2000, when it had Janet Reno in to give the Commencement Address. The President of Wheeling at the time, Thomas Acker, SJ, was a buddy of the fanatical pro-abortion AG, who carried on an eight-year jihad against pro-life groups. The next President of Wheeling, Joseph Hacala, SJ, was a former Clinton official, working at HUD with the fanatically pro-abortion Andrew Cuomo. Under Hacala, Wheeling welcomed the Vagina Monologues, the well-known lesbian child-rape stage show. The current President of Wheeling, Fr. Joseph Giamatti, SJ, is a board member of the National Catholic Reporter, along with pro-abortion Charles Curran, pro-abortion Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, pro-abortion Theresa Kane, etc.

From the Catholic Encyclopaedia http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07649a.htm

Subject: IHS

“A monogram of the name of Jesus Christ. From the third century the names of our Saviour are sometimes shortened, particularly in Christian inscriptions (IH and XP, for Jesus and Christus). In the next century the “sigla” (chi-rho) occurs not only as an abbreviation but also as a symbol. From the beginning, however, in Christian inscriptions the nomina sacra, or names of Jesus Christ, were shortened by contraction, thus IC and XC or IHS and XPS for Iesous Christos. These Greek monograms continued to be used in Latin during the Middle Ages. Eventually the right meaning was lost, and erroneous interpretation of IHS led to the faulty orthography “Jhesus”. In Latin the learned abbreviation IHC rarely occurs after the Carlovingian era. The monogram became more popular after the twelfth century when St. Bernard insisted much on devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, and the fourteenth, when the founder of the Jesuati, Blessed John Colombini (d. 1367), usually wore it on his breast. Towards the close of the Middle Ages IHS became a symbol, quite like the chi-rho in the Constantinian period. Sometimes above the H appears a cross and underneath three nails, while the whole figure is surrounded by rays. IHS became the accepted iconographical characteristic of St. Vincent Ferrer (d. 1419) and of St. Bernardine of Siena (d. 1444). The latter holy missionary, at the end of his sermons, was wont to exhibit this monogram devoutly to his audience, for which some blamed him; he was even called before Martin V. St. Ignatius of Loyola adopted the monogram in his seal as general of the Society of Jesus (1541), and thus it became the emblem of his institute. IHS was sometimes wrongly understood as “Jesus Hominum (or Hierosolymae) Salvator”, i.e. Jesus, the Saviour of men (or of Jerusalem=Hierosolyma).”
