ov. Sarah Palin on Sunday appointed former Mayor Dennis Egan to represent Juneau in the Alaska Senate, after the community has been without representation for more than half of the 2009 legislative session.
Senate Democrats met in a secret meeting an hour before Palin’s announcement and “unanimously and enthusiastically” confirmed Egan to the position.
The appointment also won quick praise from Reps. Beth Kerttula and Cathy Munoz, Mayor Bruce Botelho and Juneau Democratic Party Leaders.
Palin praised Senate Democrats, who under state law must approve her appointment, for working with her to name former Sen. Kim Elton’s replacement. Earlier Palin had been erratically appointing, abandoning and then reappointing Senators. On Saturday she was backing legislative aide Tim Grussendorf, but on Sunday gave Egan the nod.

The circus about Kim Elton's senate seat is over. A compromise was reached on who to seat for the vacant Democrat seat.
While this isn't the candidate Palin originally wanted (first Grussendorf, then Nelson), at least the rabid Obamabot Kertulla was denied the seat.
Egan is said to be rare Democrat not overly hostile to Palin.

Gads. She hasn’t been “erratically appointing and abandoning candidates.” The candidates had to be approved by the Dems, and they refused, so she had to keep on until she found one that would be acceptable to them without being too unacceptable to her.

Grussendorf and college administrator Joe Nelson were rejected by Senate Democrats. A third, Alan Wilson, was not a valid appointment, said Senate Democrats, and he was never confirmed.

There was a vacancy in the AK Senate. Palin had to appoint someone for the vacancy, but it had to be the same party as the previous incumbent. In this case its replacing a Dem with a Dem. AK Dems wanted a Leftward moonbot. Palin wanted someone who could have polite discussion with. The legislative session is at an end. The budget has been passed. The Legislators decided to go on a pork binge for federal stimulus money. The only hope for fiscal sanity is for Palin to use the line item veto. As for Wayne Ross, perhaps Palin could recess appoint him.

In AZ I think Napalitano could have appoint any “registered Republican” with approval from no one to fill McCain’s seat. Likley she prepared by having some rat switch registration.
I thought the AZ GOP had to submit 3 names for replacment. The Governor gets to pick the one.
As for AK Attorney General, some liberal blogger claimed Wayen Ross joked about date rape in a conversation 15 years ago. This is the Anita Hill saga all over again. The AK Rodents didn’t like how Wayne Ross was giving Palin legal advice over the AK Senate vacany saga. Therefore how can he be objective according the legislators.

That’s how they did it in Wyoming when a GOP Senator died. I don’t think that’s the way it goes in AZ.

In my opinion, laws that limit the governor’s choice of temporary replacement to the U.S. Senate are unconstitutional. Section 2 of the 17th Amendment provides that the governor shall issue a writ of election to fill Senate vacancies, but that the state legislature may empower the governor to make temporary appointments until the voters fill the seat at the next election. The legislature can either empower the governor to make the choice or to deny him the choice-—it cannot “empower” the governor to choose someone from a list or to choose someone with certain qualifications in addition to those set forth in the Constitution. Just as a state legislature may (and all have for over a century) empower voters of the state to elect presidential electors (instead of keeping in the legislature the power to elect presidential electors), but cannot tell voters that they may only choose from among registered Republicans or among candidates under the age of 70, state legislatures would be violating the 17th Amendment when they similarly limit a governor’s choice of replacement senator.
