Growing Antarctic sea ice linked to damaged ozone 21 Apr 2009 15:57:10 GMT Source: Reuters * Ozone hole causes Antarctic sea ice to grow

* Study helps resolve global warming puzzle

By Alister Doyle, Environment Correspondent

OSLO, April 21 (Reuters) - An expansion of sea ice around Antarctica is linked to a hole in the ozone layer high in the atmosphere, according to a study on Tuesday that helps clear up a mystery about global warming.

The findings, by scientists at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the U.S. space agency NASA, explain an apparent contradiction between a thaw of ice in the Arctic to record lows and an increase in ice around Antarctica over the past 30 years.

"This new research helps us solve some of the puzzle of why sea ice is shrinking in some areas and growing in others," John Turner of BAS, the lead author of the report, said.

The scientists said damage by manmade chemicals to the ozone layer, which shields the planet from ultra-violet rays that can cause skin cancer, cooled the stratosphere and disrupted wind patterns around Antarctica.

The shift meant winds blew off the continent more often, cooling the sea and creating more ice, they said. Scientists found a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica in the 1980s and traced it to chemicals once used in refrigerants or hairsprays.

Well if we could just move some industrial plants down there to create Ozone then we could close the hole.

Of course, the hole is caused by Volcanoes so maybe my idea won't work.

It's amazing how these "scientists" know everything about climate, unequivocally.

Know need for the scientific method.

It’s all about shifting wind patterns , yaknow.

I have yet to hear of a rationale of how a HEAVY molecule like Freon makes it through the atmosphere, all the way through the stratosphere, and into the ozone layer.

Even *IF* the heavy molecules made it up that high, what would keep them there?

This would be akin to blaming shipwrecks on boulders that floated up from the bottom of the ocean to sink a ship.

you people are idiots. Of course global warming causes weather to become cooler. You would know that if you went to a wonderful university.

This would be akin to blaming shipwrecks on boulders that floated up from the bottom of the ocean to sink a ship.

Be careful making suggestions like that -- one of the AGW proponents may very well have a computer model which shows that happening.

The ozone hole in antarctica is primarily due to falling temperatures. It’s about 9 degrees colder than average.

The compounds that help catalyze it are provided by local volcanoes.

This has been done to death already.

The fact that the Antarctic ice is growing is being used to discredit global warming. This is an atttempt to turn around and discredit that objection.

Well, they have at least acknowledged that the ice cap is growing in the Antarctic. They had to wait though until they could make up some plausible nonsense.

“Scientists found a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica in the 1980s and traced it to chemicals once used in refrigerants or hairsprays.”

Who knew that folks in the Southern Hemisphere were the only ones to use refrigerants and hairspray?

Everybody knows that happens when you cross the Equator. In fact, when you get to Australia the rocks just fly out of the water. ;^)

I'm just a silly engineer, I look for the obvious things first. Freon (C-Cl2-F2) has a molecular weight of 68. This is relatively heavy, when compared against other gases or particles.

For example Carbon Dioxide (CO2) has an atomic weight of 22, so one could expect to see that in ozone (O3) - which has an atomic weight of 24. We do not see a lot of Chlorine Gas (CL2) which has a weight of 34 or Sulpher Dioxide (SO2) up there, and that has a weight of 32.

But, Freon is a very stable molecule, and weighing in at 68 - I don't understand how that makes it up to the Ozone layer (though the troposphere, through the stratosphere, let alone into the ozone layer - over 100 km above the earth.).

Then we have this little gem:

The ozone layer absorbs 97-99% of the sun's high frequency ultraviolet light , light which is potentially damaging to life on earth. Every 1% decrease in the earths ozone shield is projected to increases the amount of UV light exposure to the lower atmosphere by 2%. Because this would cause more ozone to form in the lower atmosphere, it is uncertain how much of UV light would actually reach the earths surface. Recent UV measurements from around the northern hemisphere indicate small UV increases in rural areas and almost no increase in areas near large cities.
