McCain facing 2010 primary
Politico ^ | Ben Smith

Posted on 04/21/2009 9:25:25 AM PDT by Hawk720

Social conservatives tolerated John McCain as the party's nominee, but never trusted him, and he now appears to be facing a serious primary from the right in Arizona next year.

Chris Simcox, the founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and a prominent figure in the anti-immigration movement, is announcing today he's resigned from the group to run in the 2010 Senate primary.

From a forthcoming release:

"John McCain has failed miserably in his duty to secure this nation's borders and protect the people of Arizona from the escalating violence and lawlessness," Simcox said. "He has fought real efforts over the years at every turn, opting to hold our nation's border security hostage to his amnesty schemes. Coupled with his votes for reckless bailout spending and big government solutions to our nation's problems, John McCain is out of touch with everyday Arizonans. Enough is enough."

Toomey in Pennsylvania and Simcox on Arizona. Strong candidates to unseat liberal repukes. Even if they win the primary and lose the general, who would notice any difference?

In 2006 Pederson (D)was only able to attract 43.5 to Kyl’s 53.3% (a libertarian candidate received 3.2%), so it’s likely a quite conservative Republican could win the general if he or she defeated McCain in the primary. OTOH if such a candidate was a one trick pony - and the trick was immigration - that might not be so good; the issue might have been rendered largely moot by “immigration reform”, or other issues might be of much greater importance.

AZ could roll out a roadkill coyote carcass and I’d support that before I would McCain.

"AZ could roll out a roadkill coyote carcass and I’d support that before I would McCain."

And I agree completely!

But don't underestimate McCain. He is so tied into the Republican Party power structure that he will be hard to dislodge.

McCain has been Chairman of the International Republican Institute since 1992 -- it's been said that "the IRI does the job that the CIA used to do" and it is heavily entwined in big business, the government and the Party.

McCain is a survivor, as witnessed by his prison camp survival -- and he's probably NOT going to go quietly, however much we all wish he would! As long as corporations and special interests are willing to fill his campaign coffers, he's got a good shot at returning again and again.

Awww! You know what they say about assuming....:)
If you had read the rest of my comment,I said that I thought perhaps this guy couldn't do any worse, and may be better than McCain. I was only making an observation on the content of the article, not castigating the guy.
For what it's worth, i'd vote for the guy over McCain any day of the week, and (if I worked for ACORN) twice on Sunday.

Oh,please...Chill.
There's no problem.
I simply made an observation...you know,asked a question.
Something wrong with that?

You know...I don't think that the question I posed was so out of line. I only asked because it's OBVIOUS that the clowns in charge are totally clueless, and,by the way, I 100% agree with Simcox and his stance on immigration.
I was just curious as to how much,if any, experience he had.
Good grief....will you guys chill out??

(personally,i'd prefer Joe Arpaio,but that ain't happening...)

McCain being the 60th vote is a big problem. We have to get our own house in order before we think about anything else.

The gop will destroy Simcox. And he’s given them plenty of ammo. Yes, if I were in Az, I’d vote for Simcox over McCain, but AZ needs a better answer to McCain than Simcox.

I agree with you. I would like few things more than to see McCain lose his seat. But when I read the first paragraph here, my heart sank and I thought "Oh, no... not Simcox. Surely we can do better."

Wasn't JD Hayworth a potential candidate? Now more than ever folks should convince him to run, IMO.

Or a real conservative might also take the view that this is a medical decision to be made by mom and dad and the government has NO business being involved. Roe v Wade was a disaster and needs to be overturned but I am not convinced that government has any need to be involved one way or the other on this issue

How quickly we forget Reagan’s commandments.

How sad it is that someone would so badly misinterpret the CA GOP's "11th Commandment" to suggest that Reagan would be against legitimate primary challenges or would oppose open discussion about the issues, records, or character of GOP candidates.

So now real conservatives embrace feminist doctrine? Under that logic, no liberal dictate should ever be overturned.

Did you read my whole post? I said Roe v Wade should be overturned but meddlesome government is not a conservative view point.
