Mexican standoff: Obama must ban assault weapons to halt violence on both sides of border
NY Daily News ^ | 4/20/09 | editors

Much of the talk about the U.S.-Mexico relationship these days centers on the flow of illegal guns south over the border. Fair enough, and long overdue.

American weapons, easily bought thanks to woefully lax gun-control laws, are winding up in the arsenal of Mexican drug cartels, who are murdering thousands and destabilizing our southern neighbor.

The havoc is spilling over into our border states.

But let's not neglect an equally dangerous trend in firearm trafficking - namely, the flow of illegal weapons from America's Southern states north, especially to big cities like New York.

As crime has declined in some big cities in recent years, that war has gotten less ink. But blood is still staining the streets, and easy access to guns is a big reason why.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: Most of the guns used in New York City crimes come from out of state - from places like Virginia, where it's criminally easy to get your hands on a firearm.

Except for the part where the Mexicans get their fully-automatic weapons from the American gun stores, it’s a ripping yarn.

Give us a new president, a new congress, desolve all federal departments except for FBI, CIA, military, commerce, and treasury.

A no-brainer place to start: Renewing the ban on assault weapons. With a Democratic Congress and President, that shouldn't be a heavy lift.

You guys don't get away from Manhattan much, do you?

Ping!

A traveling House subcommittee is having hearings in Phoenix - AZ Governor Jan Brewer told ‘em in no uncertain terms that new gun control laws would do nothing to stop the violence - the only solution now is to do what the Constitution has been telling them to do for over 200 years - seal the border and protect our nation.

You can’t trample the Second Amendment just because the Mexicans are a bunch of homicidal idiots. Their violence is not OUR problem.

When it starts coming accross the border, which it has in some places, it is. But the answer is not to disarm the American people, it's to arm them, or at least allow them to arm themselves with effective weapons. Weapons that would be hiding behind every prickly pear along the border, pointing south.

Regarding a new AWB, we have something new we didn’t have in ‘94 when the 1st AWB was created by the feds......... SCOTUS ruled the 2A RKBA applied to us individuals. A new AWB may not pass heller muster.

Almost all the stuff Obama is doing doesn't pass Constitutional muster, what's one more? Besides, Kennedy would likely switch sides on any Assault Weapon ban case. "Reasonable regulation" don't you know?

Did I get it all?

Pretty much, but that "could be converted" was more like "are easily converted". But as we know, that would be illegal, and secondly if it were true, the weapons in question would be banned by the 1986 machine gun ban, since any weapon that can be "readily converted" to fire more than one round per trigger pull, is legally a machine gun.

In fact that could be the "hook" that Holder and Obami use to ban assault weapons, just declare the to be readily convertible to full auto, since "readily" isn't defined in the law, and walla, instant ban, without bothering a hair on the heads of any Congress Critters.

Other hairs might be disturbed, however, in the fashion that "The Ghost" disturbed the hair of the Redcoats after his son was taken away and his house and other property burned to the ground, after #2 son was shot by the Green Coated Dragoon officer.

Same with the .50 cal belts

Those were said to have been bought in Arizona, and it's quite possible, being perfectly legal. Even that Big Barret .50 cal sniper rifle is legal to purchase in AZ, or Texas.

Sell a few (hundred) more of those to the citizenry, and we wouldn't need to worry about rogue Mexican army or drug dealers coming across the border in hummers.

In other news the Ninth Circus made the temperature in Hell lower a few degrees by upholding the 2nd Amendment in most of it’s meaning.

This ruling reestablishes Californian’s rights to arm themselves without determinations of mental problems by unqualified bureaucrats or conviction of misdemeanors. They still have to contend with the Catch 22 of accusations of spousal threats/abuse, where a citizen can have their 2nd Amendment Right stripped through hearsay.

“As crime has declined in some big cities in recent years”

What’s this? Gun sales are up 30% year over year, month after month, and crime is not rising accordingly?

Are you telling me guns really do not cause crime?

{do I need a sarc tag?}

This ruling will go nowhere, since it will be cancelled out by opposite rulings in other circuits.

No state govt will give up a single gun law.

[snip]Cocaine sold overseas brings three times the amount of money a dealer can get in Dallas, Capra told The Dallas Morning News in a story published Tuesday.

Dallas and Houston are hubs for cartels smuggling cocaine from Mexico. From Texas, narcotics can be smuggled overseas with legitimately exported products,
“Places like Houston and Dallas are where these criminal organizations are most likely to invest their money,” he said.

Very simple, enforce the current laws and prosecute the criminals, not the ones doing the enforcing. Allow the troops that are ont eh border to help enforce the laws, isntead of handinng out MRE's and water to the illegals. People don't realize that is what the National Guard troops do..hand out MRE's and water to the illegals.

They will spot out the illegals, call it in to the BP and told not to do anything. There is more to this then that, but not going to get into it at this time.
