Barack Obama has called on Israel and the Palestinians to step back from the abyss and renewed his support for the creation of a Palestinian state.
Deepening his direct role in reviving stalled Middle East peace efforts, Mr Obama met King Abdullah on Tuesday and invited Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak for separate talks by early June.
The US president reassured King Abdullah of his commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict despite reluctance by Mr Netanyahus new right-leaning government to support the idea of eventual Palestinian statehood.
In contrast to the more hands-off policy of George W Bush, Mr Obama reasserted his pledge to deeply engage in Arab-Israeli peace diplomacy.
What we have to do is step back from the abyss, he told reporters after meeting the Jordanian king at the White House.
He said a sense of urgency was needed to resuscitate the peace process and said he expected gestures of good faith to be made in coming months.
I agree that we cant talk forever, that at some point steps have to be taken so that people can see progress on the ground. And that will be something that we will expect to take place in the coming months, Mr Obama said.
He said he was a strong supporter of a two-state solution, adding: I have articulated that publicly, and I will articulate that privately. And I think that there are a lot of Israelis who also believe in a two-state solution.

Where is Hillary?
The Palestinians need an ultimatum...leave Israel...or die.
Will they show up for their DVD sets?
Will Abbas be the first Palestinian leader to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom as a special guest of honor?
Maybe not

Wow, isn’t it amazing how this guy who is going to solve asssll the problems that have existed for decades in the middle east and everywhere else, was merely a community organizer twelve years ago...
Of course, "Osama" Obama wouldn't even think of bringing up the "two-state solution" with his visitor, King Abdullah of Jordan, by hinting that Jordan could possibly absorb some Palestinians, i. e., the two states could be Israel and Jordan.
Seems as if Obama's using the terms "sense of urgency" and "people can see progress on the ground" are eery signals - as if we needed more - that he intends to try to drag Israel kicking and screaming into more useless and/or dangerous "land for peace" accommodations with the Palis.
Are you kidding, he's got close to 2 million of them he's trying to unload to the West Bank. Can't blame him, they killed gramps, and pop had to kill 5 or 6 thousand during Black September. The good King want's nothing to do with palestinians.
Bet Obama loves hanging with kings, halucinating all the while. Bet they think he's a fool
Is he going to make a 7-year “peace” plan?
Thanks for the ping!
Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel?

Hmm Maybe B. Hussein can order a pizza from St. Louis and have a slumber party, while they solve the mideast delima.
It reminds me of the scene at Don Corleone’s funeral..
