A national legal group has filed a lawsuit against Eastern Michigan University on behalf of a graduate student who allegedly was dismissed from a counseling program because of her beliefs about homosexuality.
The complaint was filed Thursday with the U.S. District Court in Detroit, according to a federal database of lawsuits.
The Alliance Defense Fund Center for Academic Freedom says student Julea Ward was dismissed from her graduate program in March after refusing to affirm a client's homosexual behavior prior to a counseling session, according to a press release from the group.
David French, ADF senior counsel, said the school initiated a disciplinary process against Ward despite the fact that she followed her supervising professor's advice and referred the client to a counselor who did not have a conscience issue with homosexuality.
Ward then allegedly was informed that the only way to stay in her program would be to undergo a remediation process to change her beliefs as they relate to counseling about homosexual relationships, the Defense Fund Center said. When she refused, she was given a formal review hearing, after which she was dismissed from the program. The dismissal was upheld March 26 by the dean of EMU's College of Education, the press release said.
EMU spokeswoman Pam Young released the following statement this morning: "Although Eastern Michigan University does not comment on pending litigation, we are a diverse campus with a strong commitment not to discriminate on the basis of gender, race, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression."

refusing to affirm a client’s homosexual behavior prior to a counseling session??
Not sure what that means.
"Wonderful"? The term is "fabulous!" Back to reprogramming for you.
I’m sure that the ACLU will be jumping to assist this young women in her case.
It means that she followed university rules. She read the patient’s file and determined that she could not advise him because of his homosexuality and therefore referred him to another counselor.
The Left exists to stamp out those with a Christian conscience.
Political correctness will be the end of us all. I just completed our company’s Corporate Ethics Training and passed by the skin of my teeth.
Instead of choosing the answers that I would normally choose, I selected the answers that I thought they wanted me to choose, AND STILL GOT IT WRONG! Their answers to ethics questions more often than not hinged not on evaluations of right or wrong, but on the perception of impropriety.
In other words, they were more concerned with what they “felt” others might “feel” about what they were doing rather than on the actions themselves.
I must be a dinosaur!
Slowly freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of thought are disappearing.
It means that she followed university rules. She read the patients file and determined that she could not advise him because of his homosexuality and therefore referred him to another counselor.
Then she did not try to shove her beliefs down the gay’s throat and stepped back gracefully. The left are totally unleashed!
They’re infesting out colleges and universities.
And - of course - our Miss USA pageants.
Oh, really? Just what do you call this dismissal?
“Im sure that the ACLU will be jumping to assist this young women in her case.”
Same as the Bishops.

If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
Reason #1 not to return to my alma mater for the Masters. Bet they REALLY rake the education people over the coals.
Not a chance! They would be afraid to, that's not the case with Christians because we don't harm, or kill, people who disagree with us.
PM - thanks for the ping. The more I see this garbage playing out the more concerned I am about the future for my children. We have fallen so fast and so far I'm not sure we are going to turn this around.
"But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26
she is being punished for her beliefs, not for any overt discrimination.
Be thinking about a “reset”.
Secession, re-affirmation of founding principles, start over with the base Constitution & Bill of Rights, and STRONG safeguards against encroachment by those who would dismiss those principles.
Amen, and I do pray for it.
What I see is govt taking on the traditional masculine role of providing and creating order within a family. In the Black community we see what this has done and now it's spreading to the rest of the country.
I sure do agree about limiting the fed govt. I doubt any states will be allowed to secede.
Nothing in this article states specifically that the dismissed student was a devout Christian. There are other possible reasons why she may have refused to "affirm" the client's homosexuality.
Not in a million years. The primary target of acceptable discrimination today is clearly Christians. I laughed when I read this:
EMU spokeswoman Pam Young released the following statement this morning: "Although Eastern Michigan University does not comment on pending litigation, we are a diverse campus with a strong commitment not to discriminate on the basis of gender, race, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression."(emphasis added)
EMU is clearly discriminating against the grad student based on religion. There was an "easy out" to this situation, but the school instead chose to actively discriminate.
