Archbishop Alfred Hughes has told Xavier University he will not attend its graduation ceremonies next month because he objects to the university's decision to award an honorary degree to a veteran Democratic political strategist who supports abortion rights.
Hughes told Xavier President Norman Francis of his decision by letter, expressing disappointment with the university, even as he acknowledged its legacy of education among African-Americans.
Hughes also praised Francis "for your remarkable record of public service."
Donna Brazile, a Catholic and a native of Kenner, is a familiar advocate on behalf of Democratic issues, working at the national level in support of Democratic values that include defense of abortion rights and pursuit of embryonic stem cell research.
The Catholic Church opposes those policies, believing that both take human lives.

Good question. I am all for integration, and have no problems with any school, business, community, etc. having whatever races there that are on the face of the earth. However, I am against the reverse prejudicial behavior of the Black (African/American) race with their: Black Caucus in Congress, Miss Black America (beauty pagent), Black colleges and Black churches for Blacks only, African/American History Week/Month (where is the Irish, American Indian, German, French, etc. History Month?), etc. These have only helped to segregate the Blacks, not encourage integration, and have also promoted anger at Whites and hatred for the US in the Black community.
Great to hear. Now, if only this would happen at Notre Dame where Obama is scheduled to appear at the graduation and receive an honorary degree for his “achievements.”
The Bishop of South Bend, Indiana, under whose jurisdiction Notre Dame falls, is not attending this year’s graduation there because of Ohbummer.
Thanks for letting me know. I must have missed THAT GOOD NEWS for all real Catholics. It might take a while, but maybe the administration at Catholic Colleges in the U.S. will start to practice their faith like Catholics. The pendulum is starting to swing back.
