Anyone want to bet on the ethnicity of the teacher.
I’m betting more on the ‘tenured position’. ;-)
There’s a first...not a student but a teacher making a bomb threat!
I’ll bet German Chocolate.
The teacher barricaded himself inside the classroom, saying, I have a date with God,
You know, I realize this is a serious situation here but if I had to teach kids in Jr. High, I think I’d be a little bit crazy too.
Despite your apparent craving for this to be a Muslim or something, I'm guessing "white male."
PS 216 has the same name, on Ave. X between West St. and East 1st St. I went there for 2nd-5th grades.
This kinda hits close to home.
Probably a student didn't want to have sex.
“where teachers removed from teaching duties are assigned as discipline for imposing corporal punishment on a student.”
I agree...white male.
I went to PS 69 in Clason Point. The best part of being from the Bronx is that the word “from” implies “no longer”.
This teacher will be appointed the title of ‘School Security Czar’ by Zero. /s
This teacher will get a fully paid sabbatical.
QUOTES from article:
he had undertaken a hunger strike..
identified by union officials as Francisco Garabitos,..
Mr. Garabitos was a union chapter chairman at the school and had received a letter Thursday informing him that that he was being reassigned to a so-called rubber room a term for classrooms where teachers removed from teaching duties are assigned as discipline for imposing corporal punishment on a student...
The teacher barricaded himself inside the classroom, saying, I have a date with God,...
Mr. Garabitos is paid $100,049 a year...
I thought teachers these days liked them a little younger, say 14 or 15 years old.
Hmmm, only about a half-mile from Yankee Stadium. Are they off to that poor of a start?
He just surrendered. God was stood up.
” Francisco Garabitos”
I guess that hit man job didn’t pan out so he became a teacher.
A date with God..you betcha he does - a final judgment date where his threat to the school and children won't be protected by any teachers' union. This will be followed by a date with the devil, and eternity spent in his hot "rubber rooms".
Band teacher-—they’re all nuts.
I lived in the Bronx up till 1947, went to school there in the early 60's. It was pretty nice. Those days are GONE!
I agree. The Bronx was the best!
Wonder if this is him...
Remember soldiers marching up the Grand Concourse after WWII, people watching standing 10 deep. Splendid!
Teacher threatens to vote Republican if demands aren’t met. >p>
Film at 11!
When are we going to get stricter bomb control laws?
At least he’s following the gun-free-zone rules, so guns won’t kill people here. Thank goodness for those strict gun control laws! This is proof the gun laws work! /lib hat off
Ick, public school.
Poor underpaid waif! - No wonder he went postal.
That has to be him!
He’ll be back to work on Monday. In New York, the only way a teacher loses his teaching job is if he dies or retires.
No - that was a bit before my time. The Grand Concourse I can’t forget - I worked there, went to the movies there, had friends who lived on the GC. The Bronx was truly a great place to live and then, suddenly.......... :(
And you're wearing that???
Well I think I came out alright, despite 13 years in the NYC public school system.
Don't be so sure. You can hear a short radio documentary about The Rubber Room at the link below.
Click "Full Episode" on the left, and It is the second segment of the show. (starts about 4 minutes in.)
NYC should be ashamed. Some people spend years in this holding tank, with full salary and benefits.
I went to some not-so-good public ones too, in areas that always voted ‘rat. And yet we are both conservatives.

“Theres a first...not a student but a teacher making a bomb threat!”
There’s a good comedy movie in this story somewhere.
A teacher has barricaded himself in at Middle School 328, aka New Millennium Business Academy, at 1000 Teller Avenue in the Bronx. He says he has a bomb. The Post says he’s “protesting the mistreatment of teachers.” Cops says they don’t think he really has a bomb, but we’d give the place a wide berth, nonetheless.
Update 11:15 a.m. The standoff continues. Cops say there’s no bomb. Students are not going home, but taking classes in nearby schools. Hardcore!
Update 11:45 a.m. Okay, they caught the guy. Francisco Garabitos has been teaching for 30 years. He hit a student, got put in the rubber room, was making over 100 grand, but nonetheless felt aggrieved. He wanted to talk to Randi Weingarten. She was busy, so he’s talking to the cops at the precinct house instead.
Teacher in Custody After Bomb Threat
by Beth Fertig
NEW YORK, NY April 24, 2009 A Bronx middle school teacher who barricaded himself inside a classroom this morning after initially claiming he had a bomb is now in police custody. The incident began at around 8:30 this morning, and students from the New Millenium Business Academy and two other middle schools that share the same building were evacuated and taken to other schools.
The United Federation of Teachers says the teacher’s name is Francisco Garabitos and that he’s a 30 year veteran of the school system and the union’s chapter leader at the school. A union spokesman says Garabitos demanded to speak to UFT President Randi Weingarten, and when he was told that she was in Washington on business he asked to speak to the union’s head of school safety. He said he had a bomb but then recanted his claim.
Stranger things have happened.
The facebook page you posted belongs to someone with a different last name. Also looks too young.
Yeh, try driving a school bus full of middle schoolers like I used to.
I thought he had an appointment with God... not the devil.
So it’s a Business Academy and he was a band teacher... or was someone upthread attempting humor?
They re-did the Loews Paradise a few years ago... you don’t wanna know what it’s used for, not movies.
