the teacher was a union chapter chairman at the school and had received a letter Thursday informing him that that he was being reassigned to a so-called “rubber room” — a term for classrooms where teachers removed from teaching duties are assigned — as discipline for imposing corporal punishment on a student.

The teacher barricaded himself inside the classroom, saying, “I have a date with God,”

Despite your apparent craving for this to be a Muslim or something, I'm guessing "white male."

This kinda hits close to home.

I thought teachers these days liked them a little younger, say 14 or 15 years old.

A date with God..you betcha he does - a final judgment date where his threat to the school and children won't be protected by any teachers' union. This will be followed by a date with the devil, and eternity spent in his hot "rubber rooms".

I lived in the Bronx up till 1947, went to school there in the early 60's. It was pretty nice. Those days are GONE!

He’ll be back to work on Monday. In New York, the only way a teacher loses his teaching job is if he dies or retires.

Don't be so sure. You can hear a short radio documentary about The Rubber Room at the link below.

Click "Full Episode" on the left, and It is the second segment of the show. (starts about 4 minutes in.)

NYC should be ashamed. Some people spend years in this holding tank, with full salary and benefits.

A teacher has barricaded himself in at Middle School 328, aka New Millennium Business Academy, at 1000 Teller Avenue in the Bronx. He says he has a bomb. The Post says he’s “protesting the mistreatment of teachers.” Cops says they don’t think he really has a bomb, but we’d give the place a wide berth, nonetheless.
Update 11:15 a.m. The standoff continues. Cops say there’s no bomb. Students are not going home, but taking classes in nearby schools. Hardcore!

Update 11:45 a.m. Okay, they caught the guy. Francisco Garabitos has been teaching for 30 years. He hit a student, got put in the rubber room, was making over 100 grand, but nonetheless felt aggrieved. He wanted to talk to Randi Weingarten. She was busy, so he’s talking to the cops at the precinct house instead.

Teacher in Custody After Bomb Threat
by Beth Fertig
NEW YORK, NY April 24, 2009 —A Bronx middle school teacher who barricaded himself inside a classroom this morning after initially claiming he had a bomb is now in police custody. The incident began at around 8:30 this morning, and students from the New Millenium Business Academy and two other middle schools that share the same building were evacuated and taken to other schools.

The United Federation of Teachers says the teacher’s name is Francisco Garabitos and that he’s a 30 year veteran of the school system and the union’s chapter leader at the school. A union spokesman says Garabitos demanded to speak to UFT President Randi Weingarten, and when he was told that she was in Washington on business he asked to speak to the union’s head of school safety. He said he had a bomb but then recanted his claim.
