I went to some not-so-good public ones too, in areas that always voted ‘rat. And yet we are both conservatives.

“There’s a first...not a student but a teacher making a bomb threat!”

There’s a good comedy movie in this story somewhere.

A teacher has barricaded himself in at Middle School 328, aka New Millennium Business Academy, at 1000 Teller Avenue in the Bronx. He says he has a bomb. The Post says he’s “protesting the mistreatment of teachers.” Cops says they don’t think he really has a bomb, but we’d give the place a wide berth, nonetheless.
Update 11:15 a.m. The standoff continues. Cops say there’s no bomb. Students are not going home, but taking classes in nearby schools. Hardcore!

Update 11:45 a.m. Okay, they caught the guy. Francisco Garabitos has been teaching for 30 years. He hit a student, got put in the rubber room, was making over 100 grand, but nonetheless felt aggrieved. He wanted to talk to Randi Weingarten. She was busy, so he’s talking to the cops at the precinct house instead.

Teacher in Custody After Bomb Threat
by Beth Fertig
NEW YORK, NY April 24, 2009 —A Bronx middle school teacher who barricaded himself inside a classroom this morning after initially claiming he had a bomb is now in police custody. The incident began at around 8:30 this morning, and students from the New Millenium Business Academy and two other middle schools that share the same building were evacuated and taken to other schools.

The United Federation of Teachers says the teacher’s name is Francisco Garabitos and that he’s a 30 year veteran of the school system and the union’s chapter leader at the school. A union spokesman says Garabitos demanded to speak to UFT President Randi Weingarten, and when he was told that she was in Washington on business he asked to speak to the union’s head of school safety. He said he had a bomb but then recanted his claim.

Randi... yeech.

So it’s a Business Academy and he was a band teacher... or was someone upthread attempting humor?

They re-did the Loews Paradise a few years ago... you don’t wanna know what it’s used for, not movies.

He said he had a bomb but then recanted his claim.

He had drawn a picture of a bomb. Which, of course, is just as bad.

1956-1960 College in the Bronx What a cool place! Very warm, lovable folks who helped me straighten up my downeast accent, improved my social drinking skills, introduced me to politics, and barroom fisticuffs.

BTW, this was the Golden Age of NYC radio ... very hip ... great music 24/7, 3 kinds of Opera, 5 kinds of Jazz, 10 kinds of classical, a dedicated station for everyone, regardless of his opinion on anything.

You could not turn it off!

Anyone want to bet on the ethnicity of the teacher.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Another day, another reason.....
