WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday it was too late to contain the swine flu outbreak in the United States.
CDC acting director Dr. Richard Besser told reporters in a telephone briefing it was likely too late to try to contain the outbreak, by vaccinating, treating or isolating people.
"There are things that we see that suggest that containment is not very likely," he said.
He said the U.S. cases and Mexican cases are likely the same virus. "So far the genetic elements that we have looked at are the same." But Besser said it was unclear why the virus was causing so many deaths in deaths in Mexico and such mild disease in the United States.

It’s killing people in their prime, 25 - 45, which is why the freak out.
I’ve read that CDC has Tamiflu at the ready, to try and contain the outbreak, which conflicts with the “too late to contain” remarks. I wonder if the right hand knows what the left hand is doing.
But, with the liklihood of poor Mexicans streaming north to be treated in US emergency rooms, I wonder how effective any attempt at containment could be.

I think the H1N1 viruses are resistant to tamiflu,,they use Flumadine or amantadine, other antivirals. But I read the cdc memos on this outbreak and they didn’t mention antivirals and which ones worked.
There’s a Drudge link to a WHO report, stating that this virus is responsive to Tamiflu, and that authorities in both the US and Mexico have stockpiles of the drug.
Nice living next to a 3rd world nation Mexico where they live with Pigs and having a Pig in the White House that loves Mexicans.

I am mistaken,,the new virus is sensitive to tamiflu.
The CDC website says the only cases in the US have been in San Diego and Imperial Counties in CA and San Antonio, Texas.

“Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy,” said Biden to a roomful of donors. “The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America.”
“Remember I said it standing here, if you don’t remember anything else I said,” Biden continued. “Watch, we’re going to have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.
“I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it’s going happen. I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate.”
The Delaware senator spoke at two Seattle fundraises Sunday night, expected to bring in $1 million for the campaign. Biden told the supporters that when Obama will need them to stand with the administration on the difficult calls — not financially, but by using their influence within their communities to convince others that the right decisions are being made.
“I promise you, you all are going to be sitting here a year from now going, ‘Oh my God, why are they there in the polls, why is the polling so down, why is this thing so tough?’ We’re going have to make some incredibly tough decisions in the first two years,” said Biden. “I’m asking you now, be prepared to stick with us. Remember the faith you had at this point because you’re going to have to reinforce us.”

The Swine Influenza A/H1N1 viruses characterized in this outbreak have not been previously detected in pigs or humans. The viruses so far characterized have been sensitive to oseltamivir, but resistant to both amantadine and rimantadine.
