America Is Stupidly Shutting Out Immigrants. Isnt It?
By Katie Baker | NEWSWEEK
Published Apr 18, 2009
Ever since 9/11, the general perception has been that America is over-building wallsboth real and regulatoryto keep out immigrants.
Horror stories about Indian engineers getting strip-searched as suspected terrorists provoked business leaders like Bill Gates to argue that the U.S. is scaring away talent, to its own disadvantage.
Now the storyline has shifted, to focus on immigrants who are voluntarily leaving or avoiding America because the global financial crisis has tarnished its reputation as a land of growth and opportunity.
But the numbers tell a different story. According to a recent study by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), total migration flows have been steady throughout the current decade, despite tighter background checks and interior crackdowns following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and despite the slowdown of the economy starting in 2007.
Every year since 2000, the U.S. has attracted more than 1 million legal immigrants, including more than 1.1 million last year, and another half million illegal migrants. The walls are not as high as we thought.

We’re actually very, very generous with legal immigration, Katie. Now go back to Newsweak.
...and in other news, deadly swine flu (that originated in Mexico) has been found in the US.
Have a nice day and keep voting Democrat. :)
Dude, it's a global crisis. Unless you have another globe available, leaving isn't really an option.
In fact, the economy isn't as affected here as in most of the rest of the world.
Try Bill Gates for the offense of “Flooding the US With Future D-rat voters, Changing American Culture for Personal Profit, and with MS aiding and abetting MSNBC”
So far, it hasn't been deadly in the US. No fatalities to date. Only 8 confirmed cases. Not (yet) a big deal.
This could change, of course, very quickly.
Didn’t Ted Kennedy write a law in the 1960’s that limited immigration from European Nations? and allowed greater numbers from 3rd world countries? We have diseases now that were once curable that are now showing strains that are resistant to medications. I say close the borders from 3rd world countries.
...at this point I’d settle for deporting Congress. To Antarctica, because it’s the only continent that could survive them.
I hope you’re right. I live in Mexifornia..I mean, California.
Well, there are 15 million ILLEGALS in the country. How much more “nice and friendly’ do we have to be?
In his book “State of Emergency” that follows “Death of the West” Patrick Buchanan, deals with five major areas to preserve Judeo-Christian civilization in the US.
He aptly summarizes them as:
1. A “Time-Out” on all Immigration, for the purpose of assimilating those already here
2. No Amnesty for Illegals
3. The Border Fence
4. Outlawing “Anchor Babies”
5. Ending Chain Migration and Dual Citizenship
6. Ending the Welfare State “magnets”
7. Remigration - making it undesirable, through many factors, for immigrants to want to remain in the United States

The point is that there are diseases coming over the border.
I’ve got a better policy than dumbass Pat Buchanan -
1. Selection of immigrants. Accept those who can pass a battery of tests - intelligence, health, aptitude.
2. Selection of sources - preferential immigration from populations known to be easily assimilated, such as East Asia, Europe, India.
The problem with the new immigrants is that many of them come here with their dumbass ideas about how America would be better if it were a Socialist or Communist state. The majority of them desire a government nanny state loaded with handouts and freebies and they end up voting that way. The Commie D’RATS are happy to oblige them in order to gain total power and control over the country.
Boo.
Diseases like antibiotic-resistant MRSA / Staph origiated in the developed world.
It’s illegal immigration that is completely ruining America today. As for legal immigration, there are plenty of checks and balances, especially on the financial front, that the consular office in the origin-country scrutinizes carefully. You can verify this by going to any foreign US consulate website, and reading the complex procedure for immigration.
With the illegals, however, the entire mechanism is destroyed. Even the lottery system for specific African countries, aids this.
Reading newsweak is like splashing a bucket of garbage on your brain. How does this Trotsky rag stay in business? There aren’t that many doctors offices.
We have domestics like this also - 53% in the last election.
With increased cases of TB, swine flue, AIDS cases I would venture to say that the US is NOT shutting out immigrants. Well, then, maybe we are shutting out healthy Europeans and others who share our culture, respect our borders, and support our English language, all thanks to Ted Kennedy.
Bill Gates is a big supporter of the H1B visa program, allowing foreign student graduates to stay in this country for 6 years after graduation. Companies use this program to drive down wages for technical talent, as the H1B folks will accept lower than market wages for the privilege of remaining in this country. The justification, as Gates says, is that we don’t have sufficient talent in this country. While that may be true at some point in the future, I don’t believe it to be true now.
As I look to move from self-employed back into a technical position in industry, I have refused (so far) to apply to companies offering to help secure an H1B visa for applicants. They might as well advertise “Americans need not apply....”

Ted K is one of the prime causes for the immigration mess including the so-called lottery visas. He has single- handedly destroyed this nation especially by his virulent opposition to SC nominees like Judge Bork.
As a legal immigrant who arrived in this country after waiting for two years, I can guarantee you I had to have a medical, submit biographical data, have a criminal background check, have fingerprints taken, have a COLLECT phone call from the US. consulate in Vancouver to advise me when I could come to Vancouver to complete an interview (there are only two Consulates in all of Canada which issue financee Visas) and pay $2,000 in fees as well as exactly $95 fees in U.S. dollars before even entering the U.S. Consulate in Vancouver I was also not allowed to take my 1/3 inch insulin needles into the Consulate with me. Upon arrival at the Rooseville border crossing in MT, I had to use the bathroom, but was not allowed out of the vehicle to use their porta potty until their border official decided I could do so. We were finally allowed inside the office and sat there for over two hours while the customs official did the paperwork to accompany the K-1 (fiancee) visa on July 23, 2002. We married July 26, 2002 and I officially became an immigrant in the U.S. Until I said “I do” I was only a tentative immigrant, in the eyes of of the old I.N.S. Now, according to the director of the Health and welfare dept in Idaho the holder of a K-1 Visa is only allowed into the U.S. for a period of 90 days to marry a U.S, citizen. It is so nice to know he can use google to find that information. (sarcasm intended)
Only a half-million illegals per year?
Dream on, Newsweek.
...and even more generous with illegal immigration as well.
We should have special immigration quotas for journalists to immigrate here to replace stupid sh!ts like the Newsweek stooge who wrote this
“Every year since 2000, the U.S. has attracted more than 1 million legal immigrants, including more than 1.1 million last year, and another half million illegal migrants. The walls are not as high as we thought.”
WRONG. Where do they get their figures?
According the the US Government.......Add them up.....legal entries are over 2 million every year. The Obama Administration wants MORE legal immigrants and wants to amnesty 12 to 20 million more illegal aliens!

WASHINGTON (AP) Hispanics made up nearly half of the more than 1 million people who became U.S. citizens last year, according to a Hispanic advocacy group. The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials said the number of Latinos who became Americans in fiscal year 2008 more than doubled over the previous year, to 461,317. That’s nearly half of the record 1,046,539 new citizens overall in 2008, a 58 percent increase from 2007. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gQKI-mUtzRTYIm7MjslLxEoz2zVgD97DFPI01
Study: Illegal Immigrants Having More Kids In US Associated Press ^ | April 14, 2009
http://www.thedenverchannel.com/money/19175382/detail.html
Growing numbers of children of illegal immigrants are being born in this country, and they are nearly twice as likely to live in poverty than those with American-born parents...
Overall, illegal immigrants’ children account for one of every 15 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. In 2008, California had the most illegal immigrants at 2.7 million, double its 1990 number, followed by Texas, Florida, New York and New Jersey.
“In the next eight years, the violent collection of criminal drug cartels could overwhelm the state and establish de facto control over broad regions of northern Mexico,” McCaffreys report said. “A failure by the Mexican political system to curtail lawlessness and violence could result in a surge of millions of refugees crossing the U.S. border.”

Not only is it not true now, it was never true -- unless you revise Bill's words just ever-so-slightly: "... sufficient talent in this country willing to work for third-world wages."
