A new swine flu strain that has killed as many as 68 people and sickened more than 1,000 across Mexico has "pandemic potential," the World Health Organization chief said Saturday, and it may be too late to contain the sudden outbreak.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the virus has spread widely and cannot be contained, Reuters reported.
"It is clear that this is widespread. And that is why we have let you know that we cannot contain the spread of this virus," Reuters quoted the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat.
The disease has already reached Texas and California, and with 24 new suspected cases reported Saturday in Mexico City alone, schools were closed and all public events suspended in the capital until further notice including more than 500 concerts and other gatherings in the metropolis of 20 million.

This virus is a mix of human, pig and bird strains that prompted WHO to meet Saturday to consider declaring an international public health emergency a step that could lead to travel advisories, trade restrictions and border closures. Spokesman Gregory Hartl said a decision would not be made Saturday.

"We're all going to die"
Be afraid Muslims, it’s Swine time.
A new import from China?
FDR's Depression had the Dust Bowl. Perhaps Ø's Depression will have a flu pandemic.
As a personal note, my grandmother died in the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918-19. If you go to cemeteries in cities that have been around that long, you can usually find clusters of graves with those dates of death. I would hope that this latest "scare" is only that, but a pandemic is not something we want.
So they can close the border for a pandemic, but not to keep out illegals. Fascinating....
Have they closed the borders?
The last I had heard the borders were still open which I think is totally absurd.
Whenever you hear about a “pandemic” run and hide because you are about to be scammed.
The important thing is, what is the morbidity rate for this flu? What are you chances of surviving it if you get it? Regular flu kills a lot of people, but the overwhelming number just stay in bed and get better.
What exactly do you mean?
The statement “Swine Flu Outbreak Could Become ‘Pandemic’” is a nutty statement, because when “could” is understood to meam “possible” it is always true (it’s also “possible” it will be a cloudless day tomorrow too) but, without a ton more data and a ton more uncontrolled, unreported incidences of infection, it is also NOT LIKELY.
The U.S. should get out of WHO, set up an alternate that has only multiparty democracies for members, and even then, take its own council on these matters.
“travel advisories, trade restrictions and border closures.”
Border closures? hahah That aint going to happen with these clowns in charge in DC no way!
Don’t think they’ve closed the borders, I was just remarking on the option as it was listed in the article, yet any discussion of attempting to close off the borders to illegals is met with such dismay.
