Swine flu outbreak skips Bay Area for now

Rachel Gordon,Julian Guthrie, Chronicle Staff Writers

Saturday, April 25, 2009

California health officials said Saturday that there was one more confirmed case of human swine flu in the state, but none have been reported in the Bay Area as local hospitals stepped up surveillance for a possible outbreak.

In all, seven cases of the potentially deadly flu strain have been reported in California, the latest case involving a 35-year-old woman in Imperial County, who was hospitalized but recovered. None of the California cases resulted in death.

"The cases in California have all been mild, which is good," said Bonnie Sorensen, chief deputy director of the California Department of Public Health.

All were reported in the two California counties - San Diego and Imperial - that share a border with Mexico. The virus has killed dozens of people in Mexico and sickened more than 1,000 others.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus and does not normally infect humans, according to federal health authorities.

Typically, when people have gotten it, it's because they came in direct contact with pigs. But this particular strain has been spreading from human to human.

Sorensen said she anticipates the spread of the virus to become "quite widespread in this country." By Saturday evening, a total of 11 cases have been reported in the United States.

The Bay Areans are going to catch the gay flu, a slightly different variant of the virus.

WOW.........we've got to do the politically correct thing. Let's bring all those poor Mexicans into our country. I mean....like....it's the only right thing to do. They deserve it. Why else would we want socialized medicine, if not to give it free to everyone.

There is a Dr. on Coast to Coast right now who is saying Mexico is ready to get into Panic Level with riots, etc.

He is very pessemestic and thinks things are going to get out of hand.

Restrictions on air travel into the US, etc.

Stay tuned, folks!

I took a look at the symptoms of this thing and I have to say that most of the crew I worked with in the disaster clean up in KY had it.

They all had a real bad sore throat, cough etc, and a couple the trotts as well as throwing up. The sore throat moved down and developed into a hell of a case of bronkitis which hung on and on. Out of the 8 down there 6 had it and when I got down there I went for those nose swabs that Limbaugh advertizes. I did not get it and one other didnt either and he used those swabs also.

That was four weeks ago and all of the guys are still hacking up garbage from that illness. They simply cant shake it off. And we are loggers so it aint a case of being wusses.

People had better get some masks and make other minimal precautions.

Not everyone in the Bay Area and surrounding areas are gay/liberal/idiots. Don’t forget that the founder of this site lives in Fresno. I get tired of the California jokes sometimes.

That bronchitis thing is separate. My mom had it for almost a month back in Feb/Mar and she is still coughing despite several trips to the doctor. It’s an annoying illness, but not remotely life threatening.

I dont believe that masks will help. It depends on how strong the virus is. You can get it by touching things like in public restrooms etc-I.E. door handles and sink handles. You can be as clean as you can be and all it takes is for another jerk to spread it onto everything he/she touches and walla! You got it.

Actually, a sad fact is if you get it you wont ever get it again. GD viruses mutate like hell.

My sister was a RN/head nurse in an intensive care unit and she will not let any of us take antibiodics for any bad cold or flu. That is unless it gets to something worse.

Use paper products to whipe your nose and whipe your hands and discard the dam things after you use them once. She says to treat it like pink eye..never use wash clothes for washing your hands and shower and wash the towels after each use. Thats how viruses like to really spread in the home, by the multiple use of towels etc. One thing that gets me is when your in a close place and someone has a child that has a runny nose and the kids is coughing and sneezing all over without someone covering his/her nose/mouth. Those germs are splashing all over...on the furniture and all over.

Hows a person to avoid it?

Cold and flu are caused by viruses. Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses.

It’s a little stupid for the Chronicle to think this has already passed us by (”skips bay area for now”). I say it’s just a matter of days until we get some of that contact from the southern end of the state.

A friend of mine reports having the same kind of nagging, long-lasting bronchitis-like stuff noted in earlier posts. I ain’t going near him.

My paternal grandparents met during the 1919 epidemic. He was a 29 year old doughboy, burying the bodies( he lost his 1st wife to the flu), she was a 16 year old nursing the sick. I hope my genes that caused them to survive this are passed on to me and family.

Kalifornia deserves all the jokes it gets. I lived there for 24 years and fled in 1997. Could not take it anymore and predicted this financial crisis then. LA is for all intents a turd world city. SF is a $hithole and Sacramanto is the armpit of the valley. Yes rural areas are still somewhat ok but for the most part the State is a dysfunctional liberal failure.

Health officials have no business saying this. They have no idea how far this thing has spread and how many have died from it, prior to them identifying the virus a few days ago. They were most likely assigning the respiratory failure from this flu to other causes.

An irresponsible claim like this is not serving a population that is known for community sex and who suffers from weakened immune systems. It sounds more like an effort of politically correct leaders hoping to protect illegals from any reaction of self protection that might come about.

WOW just wait till Obama OPENS OUR BORDERS TO MEXICO!

Then we can ALL get it.

With the UK style “universal health care” on the march, treatment will be arbitrary. So much to look forward to with the IMBECILE leading the white flag charge.
